Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

George, I hope he’s not a complete vampire and you get a chance at him.

This is the buck that I said will die in his sleep of natural causes. There is a tiny chance that he someday loses his mind over a girl. I have seen one buck, a 2 point, in the past 9 days of hunting.

I killed a doe on Thanksgiving to support my lifestyle for the near term. She came from over the north line so I didn't consider her to be one of my girls.

I don't have to worry about this guy dying all alone of old age.

IMG_0099 (1300 x 731).jpg

the welding teacher killed him, I believe opening day, a couple stone throws down the ridge to the west.

IMG_8535 (900 x 1200).jpg

The nice palmate 10 should have stayed on my side of the north property line.

He got gacked on the shoulder by a cross gun, I reckon, the wound is not a pass through. 2 possibly 3 other bucks were gun shot and not recovered over there.

My rifle season ended on a positive note. Howling winds so I stayed down in the ditch.

Not same deer. Trail cam buck missing a G4 on the right side.

You’ve got some great deer out there!

The trail cam photo is from a year ago...same deer...

Yep 99% sure, in 2020 he was an 8pt, notice the left g2 sticker present in 20, absent in 21, and again present in 22.

IMG_0313 (1300 x 731).jpg

So the young 8pt got his second pass of the gun season. Meanwhile 100 yards up on the ridge in the Kill Zone in the last 3 days of rifle season the big 9 came through.

IMG_0031 (1200 x 675).jpg

The nice 10 who I hadn't seen as of late

IMG_0060 (1200 x 675).jpg

made an appearance, looking healthy.

IMG_0324 (1200 x 675).jpg

I hiked in and hunted Flat Gap Saturday morning seeing nothing

IMG_0280 (1200 x 900).jpg

while the 11pt was under my Kill Zone stand.

IMG_0512 (1200 x 675).jpg

Saturday afternoon I was heading for the Kill Zone to shoot Goofy but had a wrong wind once I was up there and went to my Ridge stand. Both Goofy and the 11 were at the Kill Zone.

To top it off, Target 8 made an appearance. So now I'm taking a break to get some work done in the shop and muzzleloader starts 12/10.

I vote different buck, as well. Brow tines don’t look the same and neither do the left G2s.

I’m confused by the sequence of your photos, but this buck is definitely not the one shot by the welder.

No pictures of the big boys in the past week but the regular homies seem to have my number.

Sunday morning I'm working in my shop and the 11 is 200 yards up in the Kill Zone listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Sunday evening

Im in the stand on Monday evening and 11 shows up after I have gone.

IMG_0104 (1200 x 675).jpg

Tuesday evening I'm not in the stand.

Wednesday I'm in the stand and nothing but crickets, actually, the crickets were tinnitus ringing in my ears.

I hunt a lot of places like this...hard to get past their nose with all the thermals and swirling the wind does on those ridges and hollows. I have a spot on our deer lease I can get every photo of every mature buck in the area in the daylight from but the wind and thermals are so fickle it’s almost impossible to actually hunt. I have gotten really lucky there on just a couple of occasions and it was the first sit and the deer knew I was somewhere and was trying to find me. Only way to really hunt it is with a firearm or muzzleloader so you can capitalize on it because after that they only show in daylight if I’m not there.

Merry Christmas

The cold weather had the deer moving around more during the day but they sure seem to be back in their nocturnal ways as of late. I have another 7 days of bow season and I'm just going through the motions running out the clock. The whole cast of characters that I started the season with are still up there.

Tiny returned from the Holidays in Michigan in a bag.

I planted him next to a chestnut tree that I hatched from a chinese chestnut in the spring. If the tree survives to produce, then I'll have Tiny chestnuts.
