Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

My last day of muzzleloader season held promise of seeing something

DSC05169 (1200 x 900).jpg

and I did, about 2 dozen turkeys.

DSC05176 (1200 x 900).jpg

For my evening hunt I snuck down into the ravine that my target 9 usually comes out of, no deer just a coyote working the area.

On Friday night the target 9 was around.

and on Saturday morning the big 8 was in the area.

You getting back out with a bow G? I’ve got a buck that’s been more frequent that has my attention. If he gets braver, I might get back out there.

U bet, I still need something to eat. I'm going to let the dust settle for a little bit. Maybe even dust off my climber and try some different spots. Good luck.

G, are you tuned into the Fire University podcast? Their first episode was about fire in upland hardwoods.

Thanks for the heads up Turkish, it's a fun listen and I did learn something about wildlife preference for roosted acerns. But then again I would listen to anything Dr. Craig had to say.

I'm planning on flicking my Bic this fire season even if I have to be an outlaw to do so here in Ky.

I called the forestry commission the other day to get an explanation on why they have the dumbest burn law in the history of modern man. Can’t burn during daylight hours from feb 15 to May something or other...now you can burn at night, just not during the day. That is the exact time I want to burn. He stumbled through explanation about historic drought and high wind but it didn’t add up.

One needs low humidity, wind, and solar radiation to even have a chance of carrying fire through leaf litter on my ground. There is one legal cash crop in Lewis county for example, smoky the bear lobbies on.

I thought about everybody in the hills of Kentucky is an outlaw by default?

Heck in Kansas there is around 13 counties that can burn anything except ag for a month because the smoke levels increase around Kansas City, good plan except when you just have north winds that month so it doesn't do much good to restrict them. Most other state laws rule against burning at night.Which makes sense but we burn grass at night as it helps slow down. The flint hills they burn day and night for a couple weeks.Good luck in getting yours done

Apparently so, there is a definite independent streak running through the hills.

Thanks, I did a good bit of burning at night in Iowa when it was too dry to burn during the day.

Tiny spent the Holidays with his veterinarian at the horse farm in Michigan.

Tiny was carrying a heavy parasite load, round worms, hook worms, and giardia and his treatment is ongoing. He is 10 weeks and 18 pounds this am, back in Kentucky, and starting his first week of boot camp.

I may have missed part of the story, but are you keeping the pup, or just hanging on to him while a home is found for him?

I actually saw some deer a few days ago.

DSC05355 (1200 x 900).jpg

Nothing two days ago, camera showed no deer through the kill zone for 5 days.

DSC05364 (1200 x 900).jpg

I had a good wind yesterday for my Ridge South stand

DSC05365 (1200 x 900).jpg

and I had a good reason for not shooting my new target buck, he showed 7 minutes too late.

But serious, this guy is still hanging out up there all hours of the night.

down to greens.

My target deer does the same thing...I have had opps to shoot every other 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 buck on the place except him.

You have a KY private lands biologist assigned to your area G. I spoke to mine about a burn and he said they already had some lined up so we would need to discuss again to get it scheduled. He acted like they would help with it and provide resources on burn day. Here’s a PDF that will show you who to call:

https://fw.ky.gov/More/Documents/privatelands_biologists.pdf

I had a big fire going this weekend cleaning up some dead ash trees. We do have a very small daytime burn window this time of year. It’s crazy.

They will also put a habitat/forestry plan together for you for free if you are interested. I did it, but didn’t find the information very useful for my purposes.

The best that I can probably hope for is to find the 9 point's sheds. I'm still looking for some meat and may put a hole in one of the yearlings, 9 days left.

HB, two years in I met with my wild lands biologist in Iowa and after a 3 hour property tour his only advice to me was to keep doing what I'm doing. I did look into government programs and first off found 13 sets of applications to fill out. I also found the work outlines to be too restrictive for my habitat style. I will conduct my burns this year dependent on burn conditions not burn laws. That being said I would enjoy a visit with my wild lands biologist here.

If you burn w a west wind and take down my place I’m going be bummed!! Seriously looks like it was an interesting season for you and place is coming along good. Different set of rules kinda in these hills. You ain’t in Kansas no mo!

Thanks for checking in Doug. Yes as I go through the motions finishing out the season

DSC05399 (1200 x 900).jpg

I sometimes find myself reminiscing about days spent west of big muddy.

DSC03974 (1200 x 900).jpg

Not exactly being new to this, one of my main rules developed back in Michigan was " the best way to never see a good buck while hunting is to hunt over a corn pile".

DSC05398 (1200 x 900).jpg

It just doesn't make sense to get killed eating corn during daylight hours when the threat leaves 1/2 hour after sundown.

IMG_0079 (1300 x 731).jpg

My other rule adopted early and really refined in Iowa was " the best way to see a good buck while hunting is to supply the best groceries in the form of food plots". Since much of the hard work was done last habitat season this season will be spent finishing out clearing and cleaning what I hope to be around 2 acres. My main food plot tools will be the Bic, the sprayer, and the hand seeder.

DSC05397 (1200 x 900).jpg

From the stand looking through the new plot, across the main trail, and into acres of woods before diving off into the steep. This particular area really is nothing but junk, sassafras, red maple, tulips. Outside of a couple of pockets of 50-60 year old white oaks, there really isn't an oak to be found or even a dogwood for that matter. My main plan this year in such areas is to hack and squirt the daylights into it leaving nothing but the oaks and some select tulips. The Bic will follow or precede depending on the timing of sap flow. No fear of me burning you out Dogghr I'll be spending my days in the county pokey if I let the fire get onto the corporate property west of me. All in all, I'm happy with my accomplishments so far and my resolve to someday be a big buck hunter again has only strengthened.

DSC05365 (1200 x 900).jpg

Preceding and following my little puppy's giardia diagnosis I have been blaming my roiling gut on everything from my Loved Ones spicey cooking to the jalapenos in the deer sausage that my neighbor was kind enough to give me from the palmate buck. And after last night in the outhouse I have thrown in the towel and am now on my own 7 day treatment protocol to clear my belly full of protozoa. It's a good way to lose weight but also a waste of good food and it gets old after a few weeks. Tiny finished his 5 day protocol of panacur days ago and put on a pound yesterday and is now creeping his way back up the puppy weight chart for his mixed breeding. At 12 weeks on Tuesday he will be starting to look and weigh like Tank did when he was 9 weeks of age. Tiny was off the charts under weight where as Tank was off the charts heavy weight.
