Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

???? So I go away for a year or so just occasionally checking in and come back to find Geo in Appalachia? Damn Dude, talk about livin your best life!! Just wasted an hour of mine catching up on things. Either time really flies or you get a boatload accomplished in a very short period of time. Maybe both. Amazing work.

had to finish up going right through the 1995 logging discard pile.

I about brought enough ash,

oak, and pitch pine down to keep me warm.

I stopped at the Polaris dealer and they told me to take one home for the weekend to see if I like it. I did, I do.

My food plots down below

worm bit pretty hard

but have enough tuber growth to leave as is.

My plot up top was in need of some attention before the weed floated it's seed

There are a lot of rape stalks still growing. I'm thinking some rye and clover seed next week.

My one known domestic fruit tree was loaded and the deer quickly took to shaking it.

George...Kinda feel like I'm watching Mountain Man on TV. 6 years and we've followed you from IA to CO and now Ol' Kentuck! Looking forward to the next year as you continue to amaze us all.

I had been wondering about you. I thought of you the other day when I saw the tickseed starting to bloom. Glad to hear everything is going so well for you.

Hi Steve, you do grow a fine tickseed garden. While I do grow some yellow flowers this one, joe-pye,

seems to be my new color. Lots of butterflies down in the crack.

I've had my eye on some barn wood for about 16 years now. Back then the barn had a manageable hole in the roof in one corner with very little timber frame rot but it never became a priority.

DSC02491 (1200 x 900).jpg
Now that is becoming a mulch pile with square nails, I've been given the go ahead.

I figured out how to remove barn siding,

DSC02499 (1200 x 900).jpg
one nail at a time.

I gathered about 500 sq feet of siding for my front porch in Ky.

I did enough of that wood salvaging from old mortise& tenant bank barns to know that there's money in it, and I'm just fine with letting other people have it. Because knowing the amount of work needed to clean up that stack of boards you earned it. Is that hemlock?

You sure do know what your looking at, I doubt many people would have known hemlock. 2 months ago I asked about getting some boards and the response was "Oh so now you want to schlep my barn off to Kentucky" say no more. Then two weeks after that the front half exploded out and now I'm a good guy cleaning up the mess. There are still a few timbers and some tongue in groove on the inside worth saving.

Hemlock lasts like pressure treated wood if kept off the ground. Those are some nice heavy framing timbers and beams. They should have a bit of value for fireplace mantels and reproduction antique furniture makers. If you had a trailer load of those in our area it would be valuable. There's multiple crews in our area full time tearing down old buildings and making good money doing it, mostly to supply old wood to furniture makers.

I think that I had a brain fart Mennoniteman, I believe that the timbers are tamarack, the siding is most likely pine.

That ten pointer looks like he is the boss buck in the woods, which may mean he will respond aggressively to rattling. Worth a try this fall...

I doubt that the deer in my area of Kentucky have ever heard man made rattling so when the time comes I'll probably have my antlers.

In Iowa that buck would definitely be given another year or two, in Kentucky I'm not so sure.

Pine usually didn't last quite as long, that's why the old barn builders used a lot of hemlock. It looks more like hemlock than pine in your pics.

I can buy that, the siding was way more resistant to rot when wet than the tamarack boards that it was nailed to in some areas.

and for some of the galvy off the tobacco barn.

Mennoniteman, I'm thinking that my barn might be ready to have some more galvy mined with an eye towards using some logs and the one sound log bin for other creative projects would you agree?
