Stone Branch, build it, they will come.

My last previously unexplored bowl #2, gray line.

Not as steep as the others but long 500 yards or so.

A nice oak woods on the south facing slope and I see indication of up and down deer travel.

Not a place that one would drag a deer down.

This bowl empties out at my line and the top of my neighbors food plot offerings.

The red outlined area will be my inviolate sanctuary. What needs to be done in the sanctuary? Not much. Up on the knob on the east end it is thick mostly little oaks and hickory.

DSC01352 (1200 x 900).jpg
The Sanctuary will feature a good bit of south facing slope, bigger oaks, little oaks, with understory of laurel and roses which all looks to be a choice hiding spot looking through deer's eyes.

DSC01358 (1200 x 900).jpg
The saddle area in orange

DSC01360 (1200 x 900).jpg
will end up a 1 acre + heavy hinge cut.

DSC01362 (1200 x 900).jpg
The light green line indicates deer travel with the X being the rub cluster area that I found.

DSC01266 (1200 x 900).jpg
New rub heading down,

DSC01261 (1200 x 900).jpg
older rub heading up, and

DSC01264 (1200 x 900).jpg

a number of rubs heading sideways along the logging trail.

DSC01271 (1200 x 900).jpg
The area is also a nice cluster of white oak and will provide a good west to north wind hunting spot blowing my stink out over top of the bowl.

Over the hill and up another lies Stone Cemetery to the west. I have been told that a Stone was granted my new farm after his service in the Civil War. I need to dig a bit deeper to sort the stones with the Stones.

DSC01443 (1200 x 900).jpg

Laurel Creek lies just over the hills down on the neighboring Carver Farm.

DSC01444 (1200 x 900).jpg

Laurel flows into Kinniconick Creek and a mile or so down the road the road crosses it.

DSC01447 (1200 x 900).jpg

Here Kinny forks into two and the county maintained road crosses over both forks and the island.

DSC01446 (1200 x 900).jpg

A nice musky pool starts at the lower end of the island below the riffles.

DSC01449 (1200 x 900).jpg

Another nice long meandering musky pool lies 100 yards up above the riffles. These are waters that I could actually catch and eat a fish out of. Besides musky I have seen pictures of big large and small mouth, it offers good pan fish fishing, gills, rock bass, crappie.

DSC01451 (1200 x 900).jpg

So all in all I'm pretty happy with my purchase and my enchanted forests.

DSC01512 (1200 x 900).jpg

DSC01321 (1200 x 900).jpg

I'm finding my time spent down in the crack to be quiet peaceful. I heard a whip-poor-will early in my stay and by the end they were whipping it up all over the place most all night long.

Looks good George. Be interesting to see what those hinge and clear cut areas do once they start greening up.

First thing I would have and have done is hire a surveyor, dozer operator, and purchase fencing material. Wandering livestock and drunkards are going to wear you out...

I have a survey that isn't two years old yet. The Pastor mentioned the wandering horse to the Lady that owns the farm bordering and some barbed wire was fixed and the horse has been relocated. That horse is all of the livestock in the area so I can't see that for a reason to bulldoze trees and put up fence. The drunken cowboy had to open a gate through the same barbed wire fence to gain entry and he will now go the same route my pony took. All 4 principles of the land bordering me are conscientious and will not tolerate troublesome wayfarers. I had fence in Iowa and that did nothing to keep trespassers and poachers off me and needed to be worked on regularly to keep the cows off me, it sure didn't stop dogs.

Mine works great and everyone who used to hunt my place before I got it never stepped foot on it after I fenced it...you will see livestock you had no idea was around over time...usually at the worst possible time...

Glad things are working out for you, G. I’ve always enjoyed reading your posts, you always seem to have a set of characters wherever you are and an interesting way of describing them - the Pastor, the Drunken Cowboy, Adam, the Lady, Amish Mafia, lunatic psychotics, liberal elitists etc... Ever thought about writing a book on your adventures/experiences? I bet it would be an interesting read.

Thanks 144, I'm heading to KY tomorrow to work on a couple more paragraphs.

Of your oak, are they white, red, chestnut, and black predominately ? Is there poplar on the land? Maples sugar and red? I know you say not much MFR, much GB? Place coming along good. I like the box tenement on wheels for living quarters at the moment.

oaks are red, white in richer soils, while chestnut dominate the rocky tops. yellow poplar/tulip all over where they are supposed to be. maples red and sugar often growing separately sometimes mixed. MFR needs some attention mostly just a few big plants. Green briar all over and doing well. No rodents in the box, hope to have new digs up soon.

My job up when I got back to KY was to hack and squirt the burn area (black). The fire didn't really kill anything more than an inch or two in diameter. I left plenty of nicer maples but any uglies or repeats were hacked.

DSC01557 (1200 x 900).jpg

DSC01559 (1200 x 900).jpg
My goal is to sunny up this area.

DSC01564 (1200 x 900).jpg
The next job was to clear a path down to an old logging trail.

DSC01605 (1200 x 900).jpg
once there I had plenty of tulips to cut.

DSC01606 (1200 x 900).jpg

DSC01609 (1200 x 900).jpg

DSC01610 (1200 x 900).jpg
I got the trail cleared out past the purple area where I was contemplating another clear cut food plot. There were lots of old rubs on the little maples out on the end here.

DSC01635 (1200 x 900).jpg
I got cold feet when I started thinking about what it was going to take to make this area in purple a food plot and there were other considerations.

The afternoon that I worked on the trail was cool so I had Tank up on the hill with me. I'm looking for a snake to teach him about the business end of snakes, I've been told that there are some venomous ones around. Our first snake found, a little brown under a log that I moved.

DSC01612 (1200 x 900).jpg
Not quite the teaching snake that I was looking for.

DSC01611 (1200 x 900).jpg
The next morning was warm and on the walk up to the crapper we found a teaching snake that was heading for the barn. And of coarse Tank nosed up to it and was struck on the nose, a good lesson. After we went down for some pictures I took the rat snake back up to the barn.

DSC01643 (1200 x 900).jpg
Since the day was warm I left Tank down in the rat hole when I went up the hill. After spreading clover seed in the burn area and on the new trail in for a good bit of time I was heading back down the trail spreading some radish seed when I came across this splendid specimen. I figured it to probably be a big female with perhaps a belly full of babies. I measured her on the hoof to right about 5 foot. She was totally none aggressive and rather docile towards me. Her personal space was around two to three feet when I entered it the rattle buzzed, when I backed off a bit it stopped. I didn't feel compelled to pick it up and cuddle. I spread some radish seed over top of her and we both went about our day.

I decided to cut off little maples to regrow, hinge some larger ones, and hack larger ones yet in the purple area. The ignition coil on my saw was starting to go bad so I mostly just got my hacking done over the next couple of days.

DSC01676 (1200 x 900).jpg
I hunted turkeys one morning and me and Adam went out a couple of more mornings. We had some turkey talk but none too interested. We did find a few shrooms.

We have a new dozer in the hood. It had some forward and reverse sifting issues that turned out to be a backed off wore nut and some loose linkage but nothing major.

DSC01687 (1200 x 900).jpg
The other consideration up in the purple area that made a clear cut less desirable is

DSC01719 (1200 x 900).jpg
that much of the area is covered up in oak under the maple canopy. It really is a beautiful forest area with lots of potential.

DSC01699 (1200 x 900).jpg
I have an adjacent maple area that i'm thinking will be more suited for a little clear cut that I will be after next visit. Tank became alert in the yard 2 days ago while I was working on my lunch.

DSC01703 (1200 x 900).jpg
Another school snake that was heading for my rat hole. Tank now knows about the business end of snakes.

Looking good G, and nice snake collection. I can see that little dozer be an extremely valuable tool. Looking forward to seeing the future progress.
