Starting my journey...Locust Hill Farms in the Piedmont of Northern VA

We do a lot of shed hunting, I’m always jealous of you guys who find matched sheds almost laying on top of each other! I don’t think I’ve ever found a set like that.

It doesn’t happen often but some years we find quite a few. I think one year with heavy snow on the ground I found 9 matched set that year.

That would be a dream! I get almost as excited about finding sheds as actual hunting, especially on our farm.

Completely agree! Love shed hunting and putting the season ending puzzle to bed on an individual buck. If I can find their shed it’s a moral victory.

I pulled 5 trail cams yesterday and had one shed buck, one half rack and about 20 other bucks still carrying both sides

Not much different here buddy! My friend jumped a couple bucks today still carrying both sides after walking 3 miles finding nada. I think plenty are still carrying.

We had some fuel reduction fires over the past weekend. Fun hanging out with buddies and drinking a few adult beverages. The finished product:

One hunting buddy is steady grubbing cedars in a skid steer.

Got a call from another buddy who owns a construction company. He wanted to bring a new toy to the farm to try it out for a few hours so who am I to tell him no. He’s going to push around some trees in the morning.

outside of more land, I could not want anything more than that dozer! That thing is gorgeous

@John Paul - Great thread. Love following along on all you've been doing since starting your habitat improvements. Nothing like working one's own land with the intent to leave it better than you found it.

Thank you. Get some popcorn and a comfy chair because this thread will go on for years!!!

We have so much to do I can never get bored.

Nice work on getting rid of those cedars. Such a good feeling!

Cedars are the devil! I have another invasive I’m getting really ticked off at; Autumn Olives. These things are the worst!

Looks good. Cedars do help the hardwoods grow straight and tall with cleaner trunks. Birds like to sit in cedar trees and poop autumn olive bushes.

Y’all killed any gobblers?

We killed one opening Saturday (which I felt was a gift) and they killed one this morning so far. First week was a tough to say the least. Birds were definitely not acting hunter friendly. It’s going to get much better this week I’d bet. They have gobbled really good all last week.

If you could have hunted the afternoons this past week I could have killed a bird everyday I swear. There is a reason they take the afternoons away from us in the early season!

You had any luck?

I called one in my first day right off the roost. Could of killed him with the red dot on him but I was trying to get it on video. Hindsight I don’t think he liked the GoPro about 10’ from the decoys. Been rough ever since. Nothing was talking this morning from everyone I’ve talked to.
