South Georgia Bucks

You've got some great genetics there.
Yes we do, we are finally getting the neighboring clubs on board with letting the young deer walk so hopefully in a couple years we will have a true giant roaming around. We do have one that will be at least in the mid 150's I got on video on my trail camera one time this summer but as usual the video is just enough to tease you and I have not seen him again this summer. We didn't have him on camera until he was out of velvet last year so I hope we start getting some pictures of him.

Getting the neighbors to buy in can be very frustrating! I've been trying to do this for years. I actually started a Facebook group and added all of the people who own land or hunt around me. I have close to 1,000 acres in Brooks Co on the little river. How much land do you have and where in South Georgia are you located?

My lease that I run is 1350 acres in Dooly county. We only have 7 members to try to keep pressure down. The land belongs to a private owner who uses it for a pine plantation for income, which is great for us because he rotates blocks and burns each block every 3 years which provides great habitat and quality brows to go along with our food plots, he owns 6000 acres in a big block and there are about 7 different individuals including me that lease from him. I have a good friend that leases the 900 acres next to me this year and we are working with each other on what we want to let live and what we are giving the green light on for harvesting. A 1100 acre piece that borders me is changing their rules this year to only 1 buck and 2 does and they kicked out some brown and down members that were hurting our efforts somewhat, but I believe this will really help us for next year and the years ahead if they follow through on their new rules. We have great genetics all we need is the age to get them big. My neighbor and myself also started feeding protein this year so hopefully in a couple years we will start seeing the affects of it.

Good luck with your program. You have enough scale to make a difference. I notice you are feeding in open troughs. One thing you may want to be observant of is coon impact. Here in La. I have calculated non target specie waste [ coons, possums, birds etc ] to be well in excess of 30%. Maybe as much as 50%. I started out with troughs identical to yours. Not only was coon consumption an issue but they also crapped in the troughs and generally made a mess.

After fighting the coon issue in every possible way ...trapping, shooting, shark teeth, grease, pvc pipe just to name a few.....I finally landed on either coon proofing current feeders or purchasing known coon proof feeders. I can help if you need names but hopefully the pine plantations don't have same problem. Good luck

I have only seen an occasional coon on them. They were a problem in the past but I have been trapping the property the last two years and have seen a huge difference. I have a good quail population on the property this year. I hope to think the trapping is helping because it is a lot of work but I also have a ton of partridge pea on the property this year. Most quail I have seen in the last six years. I still have some coons to deal with but so far it is not many. we have some big hardwood bottoms with creeks that the coons usually stick to and I have the feeders out away from them. I keep track of where I get the most coon sightings on trail cameras and I will put out a bunch of traps after season in those areas. I will also be putting corn in the feeders after season to get them back on the feeding stations because I stopped it this week for the season and I am sure the coons will find it which will make them easy to trap. I will put a couple dog proofs at each feeder. We are also adding 3 more feed stations after season that will be closer to the hardwood bottoms which I am sure will draw some in but if I do have to come up with something else I will ask you for more information. Thanks again

That should help out a lot! How much is a membership? I might be interested if you ever have an opening. Do you have many arrowheads on your property? That would be the main thing I'd be interested in. I love hunting arrowheads and shed hunting.
