Solo Hand Spreader

I did a search and from the sounds of it, the Solo is the way to go????

I have finally given up on the green spreaders. Those things are junk and a waste of money so its time to upgrade. Sounds like a pretty good fathers day gift to me ;);) I have done the searching and from what I see the solo is highly recommended.

The one question I have is spreading a "mix" of seeds all at once. Clover, PTT, and radishes?? In the past I have had to seeds these individually. Similar in size but they are different and would not spread evenly if I mixed all of the sees in the hopper at the same time. Does the solo have a similar issue or does it distribute the mix evenly???

Any do's or don'ts with the solo??? Any maintenance tips??

Thanks

Yes they are, just ordered a second one....for those rare occasions when I have help with the plots.

It will still spread them unevenly because as you crank any hand seeder the vibration will cause your smaller seeds to sift to the bottom through the bigger seeds. I have a solo and love it. I mixed mine and kept the top off and watched to see what the small seed did and you could see as you started cranking they went down through the big seeds. I still highly recommend it. Great spreader.

I’ve had two of the sack seeders and highly recommend the Solo seeder. I’ve only planted BOB mixes with it in very small plots but it did well. I mainly use mine to plant clover. We do it from a golf cart with one guy driving and the other sitting on the back. Works super well !

It doesn’t open wide enough to spread sunflower seeds but we used ours for the first time with buckwheat and it was nice.

I’ve had one for years. Much better than my bag spreader especially ease of loading seed. Adjustment slider could be made better but that’s only complaint. Can be a little awkward for shorter guys.
I load any /all my small seed and spread. Does good enough even if seeds separate some w size. But then I’ve loaded a hopper w all seed sizes from grain oats peas to brassica and went at it. Seems fine.

You know, I forgot to mention that. We planted buckwheat with mine this year because I simply cannot see buckwheat seed when thrown from my pto seeder. I can’t tell where it’s going or how much, but with the Solo we got good coverage.

I've spilled enough of seed out of the bags to grow a small field. I have this little unit, it's good for an emergency on small corners, that's about it;
shopping

I was impressed with the looks of the clear plastic fill tank with a screw on lid on the Chapin 8700a spreader, but I don't own one myself. Does someone have a review of this one?

Also check out the earthway 3100. Much more capable than their bag model.

I got one of these this year to replace my Earthway bag spreader after it died.

Pro - It doesn't collapse so it's easy to fill.
Pro - I find it easier to use since it hangs directly off my chest aiming frontward.
Pro - I find the flow adjustment easy to use
Con - It doesn't collapse so it's harder to store and transport

If you picking that up at the store you posted let me know and we will meet for breakfast. LOL. That town is just across the border about 20 minutes from me and real close to BrianVTs place. And I have a TS just down road from my house so be closer for your 8 hour drive. I'm sure that was a fluke, or are you stalking me?

Hold on there, I'm the Pennsylvania boy here, and that's my turf. Altough I live in Lancaster county my lodge is only 20 miles north of that tractor supply. I just assumed that since you're WVA you're a hillbilly from down in the heart of the state. The eastern panhandle is a flavor all of its own that I don't even know how to properly describe, perhaps you could explain the identity of the area for me? Anyway, we're practically neighbors, and definitely will have to get together for breakfast. I hang out with DoubleL Lenny sometimes, we can get together and have a small retreat at my place.

I think the computer gremlins are playing tricks. When I opened the link you posted it showed the store as Pearisburg VA. I’m quite sure that is not near you. But we can somehow make that breakfast happen one day. I’m headed to Dolly Sods Wilderness on upper WV tomorrow to spend the wk in the rain and that is closer than we are now.
Good luck on the spreader but for that money I’d buy the Solo. And I’m saying this to a guy that owns a No Till. Sure hijacked this thread didn’t we?

That link must be live and changing locations depending on who opens it... Anyway, that's disappointing to find out that you don't live 20 miles south of Mconnellsburg, Pa after all. Do you think you'd be able to move up there? It would be worth it just to be closer to the PA Dutch cooking.

I have a huge interest in local color and cultures, you forgot to describe how the people of the eastern panhandle differ from West Virginia proper?

I hope that you are right about the rain, we need it for our crops in Pennsylvania. Are you doing a road trip on the bike through Dolly Sods?

It shows the store in Christiansburg when I open it. I don't know if I'd take much stock in Dogghr''s assessment of people. He has been known to hang out with some shady characters from time to time.

No with the wifey. Just some backpacking which might be reduced to hiking w this monsoon. I proposed to her up there on a rocky cliff edge few years ago this wk. Luckily she didn’t shove me off the edge. And while I’ve ridden up on the bike the road is made more for a Jeep. Even has warning signs of potential of unexploded bombs left over from WWll practice.
As for rain we have had a record year after severe drought of last year.
