It looks like I am just barely out of the northern range but definitely close enough to give them a shot. I am trying to keep my plantings Native but it looks like I will be making an exception for Dunstan and Chinese chestnuts, Asian pears, and hopefully sawtooths.

I need to get mine in tubes....but other than that they germinated very well for me. Now I just need them to survive the summer. For those of you looking for acorns to grow. I had nearly 100% germination rate when direct seeded in sunny locations or put in pots so you shouldn't have to worry about a heavy mortality rate.

I planted mine with my daughter and hope that someday, not too far off, we will be shooting deer feeding on the acorns those same trees drop. I doubt I get the growth like Okie has seen, but I certainly think the grow tubes will help a lot in that effort.

So apparently sawtooths do well in southern Indiana. I have some dropping now and some that won't until November. Awesome wildlife tree.

LLC, i noted one of mine dropping just the other day. Its the only one i know of dropping this early on my place, but i dont go tromping around this time of year either. Most of mine fall in October. Spring was about 10 days early for us. Not sure if that will make a difference.
These trees provide a lot of food for sure!

Sawtooths have quickly become a favorite of mine for my farm. I have some trees that are around 10 years old now and have produced well for about five years. My neighbor has literally hundreds of sawtooths on his farm as he converted a ag field to woods through one of the government programs several years ago. This year there are no acorns on any of the sawtooths in our area and I really do not know why? These trees bloom out so late that I didn't think the late frost would have affected them. Anybody know how this could of happened?

My sawtooth crop this year is pathetic. I think a very warm February then late March hard freeze did them in.

You are probably right. We had a very warm February here too. All my pears bloomed out in February and I thought I wouldn't see a single pear but there are several on the trees now. I thought the sawtooths were bullet proof but apparently not as much as I had thought.

While I don't know what happened to the sawtooths in your area, the caterpillars really did a number on my dad's and his neighbors' sawtooths this year. They produced acorns, but not as many as in years past. The other oaks around my dad's place don't seem to be affected. This is why it is a good idea to plant a diversity of oak species. If a freeze, disease, or pest affects one species, hopefully the other trees will be able to produce.

Like LLC said, was it last spring that got them? Exceptional drought by chance? Thats a pretty late freeze, but it can happen. Ive not seen it here yet.
