Sawtooth Oaks

Guess I better add them to the “plant with kids” list. Cold stratification required correct?

I don’t think it is a true White Oak, I have always stratified them and then planted in the early spring. I will be direct seeding them this year. I also had a bag of them in the fridge for over a year and some had produced a radicle. I put them in 1 gal. Pots and a bunch of them geminated. Those trees are now in 3 gal bags and are nearly 3 ft tall I’ve had really good luck with Sawtooth.

Yep. One of the easiest to grow from acorns. I collect and then ziplock in the fridge for a month or two with a very slightly damp paper towel then a n pots in garage till you’re past the deep freeze, then once they’re up stick em near foundation on south facing side of house. Once they’re finished growing for a summer I plant them in tubes at final destination then once they’re out of 5’ tube Remove it and put a little wire cage around it for a year or two.
One thing that will give them a 2-3 year jump is spraying gly in a circle around drip line for a year or three and sprinkling with 19-19-19.

That’s pretty much the way I do it.
This year I’m going to direct seed into tubes cut to about 18”. Then fence them in as they grow. Not going to put any in grow bags at all. I haven’t tried direct seeding yet. Looking forward to see if they establish at a higher percentage.

I had always heard they were a white oak that needed stratification like a red oak. I always just put them in with the shumards I collected from the same spot. All I know is they do very well in the crappy soil I’m attempting to grow trees in and I’m impressed with that.

For non-forestry-educated deer land managers in the US, they are red oaks.

Come on LLC, nothing wrong with being accurate.

But sure, I get your point. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and requires stratification....

Agree, but don’t want to cause confusion in order to be accurate. That sounds like Joe Biden don’t it???

No, not following you there. But, I’ll gladly take a handful of your late dropping sawtooth acorns in you have any to spare. I’ve been looking in our area, the trees I’ve found are done already.
