Rye or wheat???

I usually plant mix of WR and WW together but since conversations on this thread I kept them separated this year. I will say anecdotal observation the deer spent more time in WW but they hammer both. I think WW May be performing better in our single digest temps.

WR w overseed late Oct. These are with as the NWS categorized as “ exceptional drought” which is there worst level. To the right is clover chicory and the WR.
In distance is expired brassica overseeded w WW.

This is upper brassica field adjacent to alfalfa overseeded w WW. Despite thin rocky soils it is doing well. Plan for drought or monsoon and plots will survive. These plots have been managed hard for healthy OM w plenty of micro and macro organisms at work as the previous thatch decomposes conserving moisture, keeping soil temps lower , and surviving bad weather patterns. Look in the soil , not above the soil for your success.

^^^^^Overseeded in the fall into Clover?? Do you see advantage over basic WR? My rye is 15$/50#. Same price and amount to use?

That's about what I paid for wheat here in GA as a pallet price, rye was almost double that. I had actually decided to use rye rather than wheat this year until I found out the price difference.

Yep the wheat, barley, & oats were about $16-18/bag here this year but the WR skyrocketed to $30 or $40 something per bag so Southern States didn't get any

Do you remember what you paid on the awnless wheat.
Want to try it but it's not available here.
Thanks

I don't remember the price exactly. I think it was around $12 or $14/bag. I buy it at the local CO-OP. The first time I asked about it I was shocked that it was cheaper than anything else. He explained that it's in low demand because you can't make money off it like you can with production wheat. Been using it for years. Don't even ask the price anymore, just call in my order and pick it up when it's ready.

Can you order the awnless from any of the online companies?

Yes. Check with Hancock Seed, Welter Seed, Green Cover Crop Seed, Millborn Seed, Eagle Seed... There are more places, but this is all I could remember once I started a search.

Those forage grains seems to be a nice niche for everyone. It's a good value add for a grower to make cleaned seed, and it's a nice affordable forage seed vs some of the stated variety cereals. I paid $25 for some magic oats last year, and that was still from the cover crop menu. They did do really well though.

2nd pic has clover around the perimeter of the plot and rye was overseeded into it. Honestly don't know the difference between basic WR and abruzzi rye. I've just always used abruzzi when I've planted rye.
