Roller crimping

The Rodale Institute has talked about this for years, developed or help develop the roller crimper and even give you instructions on how to build one. Dr Woods is just helping the cause by pushing its benefits.

Roller Crimper Plans

I've been dreaming and scheming about this for a long time. Crimping and drilling at the same time. This straight soybeans to a 10 acre field.

I had crimped the field a few weeks ago and while I got a decent thatch lots of rye sprung back up. I think I may have been a bit early. Learning curve. I see some beans on top of the thatch but best I can tell plenty is with soil contact. More to come.IMG_4618.JPG

Baker...Very interesting thread to follow. Is your crimper a prototype or is it in production from a manufacturer?

This picture explains why it takes larger fields to be successful with summer plantings of peas or beans. The deer were on the soybeans within days after they sprouted.I think the deer are so familiar with my ag system they investigate anytime they hear a tractor. They know the fields grow good things.

Are you running a Great Plains? I'd love to know the settings!
We started planting the combo mix today. The first setting we used was too light so we have been tweaking it. Will continue planting tomorrow for the next couple days. When we get settings right I will forward.

Here's an update. This with heavy utilization.View attachment 12442

I looked at mine this morning. Burned up ! We've had about .5" since early May. The rain East Texas got last week mostly dodged the places I hunt with the possible exception of Trinity Co. I haven't made it down there in about three weeks, but probably will next week. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but I ain't putting in any bets.

Interesting concept. I've watched couple of Dr. Woods shows on crimping then planting.

I don't have a planter. Was thinking of hand spreading a turnip-radish mix in my standing mature oats in early September then taking my cultipacker and smashing the standing oats down. You think this will give the same effect?
