R1 vs. R4 tires

I wasn't sure how many people would be buying either. I know our situation in TX is a little different than what has been going on in NY. With the financing specials on tractors, they have been selling quite a few. I pick mine up today and the dealer said that he has sold over 40 in the past few weeks. I had another dealer tell me something similar when I was on their lot as well.
I was also watching and hoping for cheap equipment deals. About the only equipment that I have seen for sale at a deep discount yet is the Boeing 737max but I don't like buying if the MFR is going out of business, too difficult to get warranty and parts.

These pics reminded me of burying a rental 43hp Excavtor last summer. I was making ditches in an area that it appeared dry but it buried the tracks. Everywhere I could get the bucket to try to push pull or lift had the same problem. Ended up pulling it out with a couple of 4wd tractors and a bunch of chain in combination with the bucket. I was too ill humored to think of a photo at the time. Sometimes, stuck just happens.....

Got excavator stuck. Rounded up all the chain and cable we could borrow to get tree to bucket. Pulled the tree over. Went home. Left the keys in the ignition. No one was going to steal it

Unless you plan on working on hard pack and will be using your tractor for plotting, etc. I'd personally go with the ag tires. We have a 55hp kubota 4x4 with R4 tires and a 48 hp john deere 2wd with R1 tires. The john deere pulls a disk better than the kubota in 2wd. Also the john deere will go places only the kubota can go in 4wd. I also noticed the kubota's tires have a hard time shedding the type of mud we have. Once the tread gets packed it's over. If these tires ever wear out we will be replacing them with ag tires no doubt.

I doubt any type tire or track would save a person from that quicksand. But this might ...I know before most on here times.

I should have taken a picture of my job I did yesterday...brushhogging 14 acres in a 240 acre parcel all along all the roads...road areas were 87 feet wide and the longest section was 1 mile long but several smaller off the sides. He wanted me to Brushhog the entire front area along the main county paved road. It had a ditch along the road and I got too close to an edge backing between a big electric box and the edge and slid off. I knew I was in trouble because the tractor was laying almost sideways over and the mud was so deep my foot steps were under the mud. To make it worse I was so close to the paved road my ROP and aluminum topper was sticking out in the road. My truck was a mile away...uphill a good portion of it so I goofed it to my truck, unhooked the trailer and ran down to pull it out hoping nobody would run into it as there was a rise both ways and you couldn’t see the tractor until you were about 60 feet from it...long story short, 82 rear old guy across the road ended up in my truck pulling while I was on tractor backing it up the ditch about 50 yards to a shallow enough area to get out. It would not have made a lick of difference what tire was on it. Only regret is I didn’t snap a picture...

My dealer is having trouble finding the tractor that I want with the R1 tires which I was afraid of. Lot's of guys buying tractors right now with all the killer financing deals and other dealers just don't want to transfer out the tractors that they have in stock. It shouldn't be a deal breaker for me because he's asking WAY below everyone else is but I would much rather prefer the R1 tires for what I'll be doing with it.

The R4 tires will definitely work for me just not as good as the R1's . Most of my fields I have to stay off from early on in the spring anyway because they are just too wet to do anything on anyway. The R4's will be better for loader work and more puncture resistant for brush hogging which I will be doing quite a bit of anyway.

Still up in the air though.

I'm surprised that the dealer wasn't able to come up with R1's for you. Most dealers will find a way to accommodate a new equipment buyer if the model is available in the brochure. For that big of a tractor doing field work, the R4 tires would be a deal breaker for me. I could just see myself a year down the road scouring craigslist for used ag tires to swap out.

They are switching the R4's for the R1's for me luckily. They had to order the wheels and tires and then they'll be swapping them over when the tractor comes in.

I'm guessing that everyone is opting for the R1's because they are a better option for this tractor that I'm getting but I could be wrong.

I grew up on a farm and even though I'm a carpenter I've driven ag tractors all my life, up to 200 hp with power shift, and I'm thinking that you will never regret that decision. For a 50-60 hp tractor used primarily for field work like mowing R1's make the machine feel like a lot more tractor.

I have a Kubota MX5100 4wd. Pretty much the best tractor for my needs for wildlife habitat. Small enough to get places, big to pull and cut some stuff. Great choice.

Cab or open station?
Had to go with a cab because of my 2 young boys that always need to go with me. I figured that would be worth every penny because I worry about them getting stung by ground bees or falling off when they’re with me on one of the open station tractors we have. Plus, the older I get the less I like the sun and the heat. The A/C is going to be nice for sure.

I went with a FEL as well.

You won’t regret the cab....

A cab is so civilized. It seems whenever I have the time to work with my tractor it's either freezing or sizzling, and the cab makes both of those extremes a lot more bearable. My new holland tractor also has a second seat, which is worth a lot when taking a youngster along.20200530_181510.jpg

I like the smell of new upholstery. You are going to get a lot of years of service out of that thing. Did you take the boys for a ride yet?
No, I haven’t yet. It’s still at the dealership until the tires come in.

That will be the first thing I do with it though is take the boys for a ride.
