Quapaw Meadows (My 160 Acres)...

Glad to hear the wing is healing up!
Looks like some good daylight deer activity in the plots.

Planting is hard work so be careful switching implements and the various other things you are going to have to do to get that done.

I have a buddy coming to help me plant and I always have my pops also. The tractor is easy to drive one handed but I sprayed with my ATV and that was not so easy turning one handed but I gotter done

Looking good Todd, that's a bruiser buck. I had a Cowpea/sunflower & soybean bust as well, the deer destroyed everything on the east end of the ranch, the west end didn't turn out too bad.

On another note, did you happen to get your persimmon grafting thread saved? I have hundreds of trees I'd like to try some grafting on some.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

No, I didn't save that thread. However, if you need any help or scions just let me know. We have some grafting pics and how to pics on persimmon grafting in the Fruit Tree Room. Fish posted some good bark grafting pics on how he does his persimmons.

Awesome pictures Todd. My persimmon graft of yours that didn't break off from the storm looked good last weekend. I need to cut some cane poles and brace it up sometime.

Thanks Todd, I do have plenty of female trees fruiting, I'll know soon on the drop dates, may request scions after that, depending. I no doubt will be hitting you up for info though.

Well, there you go. You are able to beat the rest of us on food plots with one hand tied behind your back. Good job. Looks like they will be great with some rain and cooler temps.

Glad you doing better Doc, and getting some farm work done. It did hurt me tho seeing that pic of you riding on that tractor. Say what you will, but I know that thing is sore.

Well my shoulder is getting better by the day. Still painful when I move it the wrong way but function is returning. Went back to work last Thursday and even doing surgery. Hoping for a full recovery by deer season.

A week ago I went out and did some mowing. Fortunately the mower was already hooked up to the tractor and with power steering it was pretty easy to mow one handed. I went slow. I was getting quite a few broad leaf weeds in my boggy bottom clover plot and wanted to get them mowed before they produced seed. The number one weed is what I think is mares tail. If I mow it right at the very early flower stage it will usually die. There were a few other scattered broadleaf weeds. We were suppose to get a rain the next day but it didn't come. However, I did get a 1/4" yesterday and the clover and chicory plot is doing great.

Prior to mowing--you can see the weeds were getting pretty tall. However, the deer don't seem to mind the weeds.

A week later (today). No spraying on this field. It is very clean after a good mowing.

Glad to hear about the shoulder. I slipped and fell on wet(raining) cement last Nov. 26, Thanksgiving night. Broke my ankle in 2 places. Right during rifle season! My deer season was over. Wore an air cast and on crutches for 6 weeks. Hope this season is better!

Nice variety of wildlife, and your place looks remarkable considering you had a shoulder replacement. That danged Johnson Grass will only get worse, and if you figure out how to manage it, we'd all like to know! Gotta admire seeing you tough it out on the tractor, that's determination!

I wasn't able to get mine staked this year and lost most of them to strong winds. Too busy at work and shoulder issues. I'll regraft next year.

Thanks buddy. Being one armed is a challenge for sure. Thank goodness for power steering. Lol

Looking good Todd, some good deer activity. Good luck with the Boggy Bottom Buck.

G

Thanks G. Rare for me to have this many bucks on my land this time of year. The creation of the boggy bottom plot is pulling quite a few deer from neighboring properties. Native forage getting unpalatable during the late summer so the clover and chicory is tasting pretty good. With the number of does I have hopefully they will stick around.

Just about the time I think I have it under control it just returns. Impossible to get rid of it all and as you know it is a heavy seed producer. My beans did not canopy this year due to dry conditions so the JG was there to fill in the bare spots. Partially my fault for being lazy and not spraying a 2nd time.

Some good looking bucks and Pears there doc.

You mentioned sunflowers, Do your deer hit them hard? Our smaller sunflower plots didn't stand a chance.

In years past I planted AWP with my fall planting as the ice cream. Then last fall I decided to try sunflowers. Whenever I plant them in the spring they get devoured after about 6 to 8" of growth. So I decided to add them to my fall planting last year and it was a huge success. They were the preferred forage over anything else planted. Of course they die after the first freeze but a great early season draw. After the first freeze then the deer target more on the cool season grains and brassicas.
