Pinetag's Plot - 43 acres in Virginia

Went out this morning to cut down the stump on the other side of the bridge, but had chainsaw problems and couldn't get it finished. Also, none of the Egyptian Wheat germinated so I don't have a screen along the road bed and now there is just a strip of dead foliage running the length of it. I may try to throw some more seed down next time I'm out.

Some good news though...I have a couple velvet bucks that have shown up on camera and I also have some poults hanging around. This is exciting as I have had very little turkey activity on my place and now they're starting to show up on camera more often.

Found some blackberries growing up near the cottage and my chestnuts are still doing ok. A couple have yellowing on the tips of the leaves but overall they seem alright.

The farmer across the road planted corn again this year in the 15 acre field.

Got out this morning to try get my road screen established. I raked the area I sprayed a couple weeks back and re-seeded some Egyptian Wheat so hopefully this time it germinates.

I checked on my creek plot and the clover is starting to come along but the rye is dying back. I threw some store bought beans down just to get some more green growing until I mow and seed for the fall.

Got my first fawn pic of the year as well as my first pic of a deer bedded in the creek plot. Also got a little buck passing through.

Keiffer pears are getting bigger and I got another turkey pic. I hope they continue to hang around.

Also cut some shooting lanes around a couple of stands. I have a few more to do and my stand work will be done for the year.

I don’t think you are going to be able to get a screen to grow here. Not enough light.

Yea, this is the upper section and I don't really need it here so much. Down at the lower section you can see it opens up quite a bit more (zoom in), which is where I really want it to grow. I just need something there for this season as I plan to limb the road back and plant some Spruce seedlings next spring.
Here's a pic from the food plot and you can see the light area in the middle...that's the road bed about 40 yards away, down at the lower section.

I had a brief but interesting morning out at my place. I went out early for about 1-1/2 hours to hang a couple more cameras and trim some shooting lanes around 3 more stands. I hung the first camera on the same tree where I got pics of some nice bucks moving through last Oct and Nov. It's right up near the cottage. I wanted to hang the second camera down along the river, farther in than the one I currently have down there so i figured after I hung it I'd just work my way back toward the truck cutting shooting lanes. So I cut a couple lanes at stand number 1 and then cut a couple lanes at stand number 2. As I'm approaching stand number 3, a large, black shadow bounds off in front of me and then stops to my left about 25 yards away. After a moment it starts walking away heading further into the woods. My first bear sighting! Unfortunately I didn't get any pics as I was a little more concerned with looking for cubs than breaking my phone out. It literally ran under stand number 3. Now I'm not the best at judging bear size as I've only seen a few in person but this one looked to be a right good size. I'm guessing 3 feet tall at the crest of its back and 150+ lbs, maybe more. Regardless, I was running short on time and did not get the lanes cut at stand number 3. Haha.

Well we just got back this evening from our family vacation (vacation #2 for me and the wife). We made the 12 hour drive up to Niagara Falls on Wed and stayed on the Canadian side. We got to see the falls lit up at nighttime while they shot fireworks out over them. Then, on Thu, we got to go behind the falls as well as take a ferry ride beneath them. It's incredible the power they create. You can literally feel it rumbling under your feet as you're standing in the caves. On Fri, we drove about halfway home and made a stop in Hershey, PA to see the Hershey factory and play in the amusement park. I never knew how beautiful PA was but I really like the farm and forest feel they got going on! Today we stopped at Lancaster to watch the Jesus show at the Sights and Sounds Theatre and then eat some authentic Amish food. Both were amazing!

I'm about 3/4 of the way done with my stand preparations now. I cut shooting lanes for the last couple of stands that still needed it and then I raked about the last 30 yards of path leading to 3 of them. I have a few more to rake paths to and I should have a nice quiet walk getting into each one.

The store bought beans are coming up in the creek plot and the deer are using it some, but there are lots of weeds so I will be seeding oats, rye, and clover into it in a couple weeks and then spraying. I've gotten a couple pics of this little buck cruising through it recently. He has a very narrow rack.

Also, I got my first ever bear picture so that is pretty cool. I think it's the same bear I saw a couple weeks ago. The stand he walked under is about 40 yards straight ahead, just off this trail so he must like this area.
