First family camping trip out at the land! We've had a good time metal detecting (only found junk), playing board games, and making s'mores around the campfire. The dogs are tuckered out from the fun and my daughter especially liked decorating her room (last pic).

Thanks farmhunter and merry Christmas to you as well! I hope you're right. I just got a recent pic of this guy and it appears he might make it through as the season is about to close here. He should be pretty good next year.

Definitely not me! I don't like marshmallows. My wife made the most but she also dropped the most in the fire, so it would probably have to be my daughter by default. Yea, her and my wife added a bunch of the decor out there but I did tell her that any mounts will be hung up to give the place a little more of manly effect...LOL.

Well, I closed out my first season as a landowner today! Things started off pretty good in late Oct during bow season and continued into Nov but have dramatically cooled off since the dogs hit the woods. Overall though, i had a good season! Got some good bucks on camera, saw a few bucks from the stand (one really nice one), learned a fair amount about how the deer use the property, and even got in some family camping time right after Christmas. I definitely have some plans for the upcoming year about ways to improve the deer usage and hopefully keep them hanging around more often. 2018 was the second wettest year in recorded history here in VA so it was fitting that it rained this morning as my last sit of the season. LOL

I climbed down a little early at lunch time to look around a bit. I came across what I think is a fairly fresh coyote dropping as well as a young doe skull that appeared to be from last season.

You will find hunting completely sucks in VA if you have hounds in your neighborhood once they start running. I sold my central VA farm because of it.

Habitat season 2019 has begun!

I went out this morning and started working on the planned 1,000+ yard trail going around the lower 20 acres. The goal for today was to get about 200 yards cut wide enough to get the 4 wheeler through. I actually ended up making it 350 yards (right where I plan to put a future stand) in 3 hours so I felt good about the progress.

Here is a pic showing the top of the tree that had fallen on the other side of the bridge, right where my path was planned. I had to cut an opening through all the branches hanging in the way first and then I could clear out all the saplings on the ground. I will take down the big standing tree at the end of the bridge on a different day.

The weedeater is a Troy Bilt and the brush cutter blade is a Makita. I looked on Amazon and found a really nice looking "Forester" blade that I might pick up as a spare.

I bought a Stihl brushcutter a couple years ago. Much easier than using the chainsaw for the smaller stuff.

I’ve been using a pole saw with 10” bar for clearing trails and I’m a huge fan. The long arm on the saw let’s you remain upright when cutting so it’s not as hard on the back as using a conventional chain saw. The 10” bar gives you some flexibility for clearing out the bigger stuff if you need to. I had also considered the brush cutting blade for my weed eater but ended up going with the pole saw instead.

My FIL has a pole saw attachment that will come in handy for a few specific things I can think of, but this brush blade is the ticket for trail clearing. Cuts saplings off perfectly flush at ground level and it will go through some decent sized trees if you rev it up real good. Plus it will take care of some of the stuff that a chainsaw has a hard time with like briars and grasses. I highly recommend one!

I just knew there must be some new thing I need;and now it appears there are two! Glad you guys mentioned the brush blade and the pole saw. There is a lot of trail work to do here and it sounds like either one of those will be better for the job than clippers and the chainsaw. I'm thinking the pole saw with the ten inch bar might be a good purchase for me as there are normally downed trees on the miles of deer trails being managed.
