Pecan trees for you habitat guys

I like pecans too. While I've never saw deer eat them if you were to drive by on the right day in the fall you'd definitely see me eating away.

I've saw where it's been reported here in Arkansas, but I've never saw it. I don't doubt they do though.

I can't keep them off mine.I even put a tarp under a tree this year to try and gepecan buck.jpg pecan buck.jpg t more and have pics of deer standing on the tarp eating pecans

I been around pecans my whole life but never seen deer eat them. I always it was because of that bitter crap in between the meat. Hogs will wear them out though.

We have pecan everywhere and deer don't touch them. Are you sure they're not just eating the leaves? We even have a lot of different papershell varieties which would be a lot easier for them to get into and they still don't touch them. Cattle, on the other hand, will wear the papershell out. Stuart is a very old variety. There are much better ones out there now like Pawnee and Oconee that are disease resistant, bear earlier have a paper thin shell and are much bigger.

tell you what im just going to have to video them eating them ,, will take a spell since we don't have any right now but just to prove we are right I will do it ,,

I have pecans by the millions on my place and have never seen deer feed on pecans. Been grafting some of the smaller natives with a larger paper shell variety - but that is mainly for me.

We do the same here Docdoc. About 10 years ago put in a 50 tree orchard and had problems with deer feeding on the leaves. We had to fence each one to keep them off of them while they were still within reach of the deer. We also have big mature native trees that produce lots of pecans and I can go out there right now and find tons of them on the ground. This is how we get most of our root stock for grafting. Just wait until spring when the pecans sprout and go dig some up, transplant them and wait a couple years until their big enough to graft. All I'm saying is that they aren't a preferred browse for all deer. Apparently AR deer love them.

I believe you I'm just saying deer in my area where there are tons of pecans every year do not browse them. Maybe there's too much other stuff to eat for them to have to expend the energy to try and crack them open.
