Passions beyond Deer & Family?

Dogghr, one of my life's regrets was never riding a motorcycle. Power to you, my fellow Appalachian American. :)

Used to teach Taekwondo and kickboxing in my younger days, recently trained Brazilian jiujitsu for a couple of years(off and on) and golf was once a twice a week passion. Spend most of my time now watching my two girls play volleyball and basketball. I have recently got back in to golf a little and really want to get back to BJJ.
Last summer I bought a fishing kayak and think I may have a new passion. My dad and I fished ALOT growing up but after college I kinda moved away from it to pursue hunting and other hobbies. The kayak has really re-kindled my love for fishing though. Just being on the water in the kayak is fun, catching fish is bonus.

I have to remind myself often that my faith and service to God and my family are my priorities and as mentioned before, the only things that will matter 100 years from now. But, life is meant to be lived, and I can't imagine how people get by without passions and hobbies.

That's some kind of clean on that car!
Yea I'm a bit anal with that. My Jeep is covered in mud from off roading up a deserted creek bed this past weekend and its driving me nuts. Will take care of that problem tomorrow.

Never too late!!! I know a guy who rode solo to Texas in a weekend last year age 76. On another note, I can't make our the ink on your arm, can you tell me what/who it is? Looks cool.

I like to fly when I can afford it. Don't own a plane but have access to one. Anyone that wants an aerial view of there property within about 100 miles of me I'd be happy to take up (after bow season)

Looks like gregg allman to me.

Fly fishing, mostly warm water and salt water species. Hunting upland birds and rabbits behind my wachtelhund. I took up guitar 2 years ago at the age of 42. So glad I did! I have always loved to sing, and do some gigs locally once in a while. However, I needed to learn to play an accompanying instrument. Figured guitar was going to be easier than piano, so I took the leap. I don't regret it.
I also love tactical shooting and martial arts. I was a MMA fighter before the term was popular. Too old to compete now, but with teenage boys (and a world in chaos), I have resparked my interest in fighting style martial arts like Thai boxing, judo, and jujitsu, and western wrestling.

I am lucky that my two kids and three grandkids live in my hometown. I like growing trees for deer - so that is border line.

I enjoy people. I was educated to teach school which I did for 11 years - 3 junior college and 8 public schools. I worked in the State Election Office for Tennessee for 10 years working with 95 County Administrator of Elections and 475 County Election Commissioners.

I like the forum in that we get to know people that share the same passion we have. How GraceNmercy and Mattpatt grow is different from the guys in TN or NY. What makes this forum the best is the helpfulness of the experienced posters - everyone contributes positively as a rule. The first day anyone signed up on this forum was July 20th - talk about quicker than your eye.

I knew Chinese Chestnuts would help me make new friends - which it did. I don't talk about it much - but I like game cameras. They taught me more about deer movement and tendencies that I would have figured out in two hunting careers.

Baker - you are a maniac to do that physical stuff at this stage in life.

J-Bird - a great thread. I hope the Cubs break thru. It would be great for the game!

That is Jeff Hanneman. He died three years ago of cirrhosis at only 49. He was a co-founder of thrash metal legends Slayer. He inspired me to play guitar, even though i waited until my late forties to pursue that. I was a big fan in the eighties and sort of rediscovered them in 2011. My new wife took us to Indio, CA, in April 2011, to see The Big Four (metallica, slayer, megadeth, anthrax) and seeing those guys jam for the first time showed me what i wanted to do as a hobby till the day i die. And that is jam thrash metal in my mancave. Lol.

I got lot of ink in 2016 to pay tribute to heavy metal, and Slayer in particular. Jeff is on my left outer forearm, Tom and Kerry of Slayer are on my inner right forearm, and SLAYER is on my right outer forearm. I have to wear long sleeves and a tie for work anyhow, so i wanted my skin to be mine and represent me when not at work.

I am going to get various album covers of Slayer to fill in the bare spots on my arms. My calves are going to be for Pantera and Guns n Roses. Lol.

Another high point of my life regarding Slayer also happened in 2016. My wife and I were working part time full time at a nearby concert venue for over a year and Slayer played there in February. We got to load in and load out their equipment. Hanging the backdrop and drop sheet....all of the extra lights and speakers....seeing the guitars...it was surreal but fantastic.

My wife as part of her professional capacity got to escort VIP's side stage at the beginning of the show and she got to help load some items in their tour bus afterwards. She was a pro and didnt act like a fan, though, as required. But she did see all the guys up close and personal, even loading their fridge with beer. Lol. I think i was cleaning up puke in the venue or getting folks to sit down in the VIP seating or some other duty while she was getting to do all the cool stuff. Lol.

I didnt watch the concert. I was a pro, too. But it was fun to serve slayer fans and help them stay safe and enjoy the show. I could hear the music.

I'm a huge razorback fan. Huge enough I attended every home game in the John L Smith era. Got ribs and chicken on the grill for the game tonight with tcu. I grew up on the southwest conference so it's an extra big game for me!
I also build cars when I find the time. My son and I built this 71 Chevelle over 4 years when he was in high school.

I wish their still was a SWC, Merle. I hate all the new alignments. Ruined a lot of historical rivalries. Created more geographical headscratchers, too.

I grew up in NW Arkansas, and my younger brother was the Razorback mascot for 4 years before going on to be a professional NFL and NBA mascot. Though I am not a sports fanatic, I do like to watch Razorback football (incredible game last night) and Kentucky basketball.
I can't believe I left out blood tracking. Tracking has become a bit of an obsession for me the past 6 seasons. I enjoy it about as much as the hunting itself.

I've worked @ Virginia Tech for over 27 years. I try to support my Hokies.... It gets really hard and depressing at times.Last night almost done me in for college football.

I agree "it's never too late".
I taught the Motorcycle Safety Foundation 's Basic Rider Course for 10 years. Take the course. Worst case scenario you'll find out it's not for you. They supply the bikes and helmets. Low threat, safe learning environment. Had a lot of students that just wanted to learn with no intention of taking it further.

Man.... I used to fish, used to watch a lot of Texas Ranger baseball, used to have cable tv..... Ha! With these three there's not much time for anything else.

Wouldn't have it any other way

I say no to a lot things in life to spend my time with these crazies.

Even though it's a job, it's a passion to manage my farm.

Definitely a different kind of farming. Many of hours spent tending to all these trees. You get to know each tree individually. When my kiddos grow up, someday they will get to enjoy the same trees I put years of work into.

My other 2 passions are fly fishing and waterfowl hunting. I usually try to take a trip out west at least once a year. I have fished many of the western streams and lets face it trout only live the best landscapes. I now chase ducks and geese when I can find time.

Well, It used to be

Case Knives

Street Bikes

And training competition Coon hounds

But at this point beyond family I am pretty obsessed with trees & habitat !!!!

Great thread by the way, really enjoyed reading through your all's comments
