Pa Hillbilly Farming

Really cool pics of the place and I hope that finger heals up for you. The hanging bed is cool....hope nobody gets motion sick! Really like the pic in #125.
Finger is healing as good as one could expect.Hanging bed doesnt move much at all, the trick with them is to have the ropes all slightly angled away from the bed so it has to raise to move. everyone loves them but the dog. his we had to lower to the floor. #125 pic was one of the many rainy evenings we've had here. As I write this Im looking out office window at the nicest day we have had in weeks thinking i should be at the cabin so I may blow outta work a little early today and see what a dry day looks like there..

since my hand was laid up the wifey took the weed wacker around the deer fence. I took this pic when I rode out to give her water and refuel. I am a lucky man. Lol

started clearing on one of my food plot extensions. I’m hoping to add about 5 acres to this plot. I have logger clear cutting it right now, then I’ll clean it up. If it ever dried up here I’ll start clearing it as he continues to cut so I’ll be done about same time he is. Hopefully I can get it planted in about 3 weeks.

this is one my kill plots I planted clover and oats in May then brassica in July. Opened up a side access that had been blocked off by trees from when I made it. Deer started using new access right away better pinch point for them.

not a big buck but I thought he has neat rack beams almost touching. One of many JV players I have waiting to go to varsity team one day.

this little plot and the one with the small buck were both planted 3 weeks ago today. Significantly difference in the growth. One gets better sun and drainage and the other has much better soil but has grown much less. Throw and grow isn’t as easy as it sounds. Last few years have been big learning curve with what it takes to have successful plots.

while I was flying my drone which I was only 75 yards from this camera my phone notified my of pictures from my Sparton camera and looked behind my and saw 9 deer feeding there. For those who have following my post I was sitting at my shooting bench while I was using the drone. I was trying to get some photos for the new plot extension. It was a nice feeling seeing lots of deer out and about on Saturday. I tried to keep track of what I saw, wife and I think we seen 10 different bucks while we were putting up 10 new cameras. 10 cuddllinks with cell and 2 sparton a Moultrie modem and one soy point gives 14 cameras sending me photos to my phone. I’ve all ways said give the laziest guy the hardest job to do and he’ll find the easiest way to get it done. “That would be me”. Lol.

Place looking awesome. And you are right, T&M is a def learning curve with plantings. Gotta ask, whats your opinion on APRs in the state? My buddy from there hated the idea and threatened to quit hunting but now says it was a great move and is a big advocate. Hes in central PA which may make a diff. Theres always a push to do it here but doubt it happens. I like KY idea of limiting buck kill to achieve same results. Good luck on season.

Our APR is only 3 on one side. western side of state is 4. I wish we were 4 too. Everyone complained at first from needing to see the rack before shooting. You know the brown its down theory. Now a rack deer you can see everywhere. 90% of people are looking for older deer now, so I say its a good thing. With us only have 1 buck limit and now point restriction and put on top of that not as many hunters we are starting to see much older deer.

I’m in 2f and we are still three points over here. I wish they would slide the four point rule over one more wmu. I agree we are starting to see better deer. As a kid if someone shot a 16 inch eight it was a huge deal now people are passing them because others are connecting with giants. I think it’s only going to get better. My biggest problem is the Dutch army. They have lots a tags and put a hammer on deer. I’m jealous of anyone that doesn’t have to deal with them (hopefully you don’t). Only plus is the pressure they do put on just runs the deer into our block of posted ground.

question fellow deer farmers. I’m trying to decide on are doe management this year. Last year we took 7 doe on my 350 and neighbor took the same on his 400. We got 30 plus acres of food plots out and you can easily see they are eating them. The browse pressure doesn’t seem bad yet. I took these pictures today of random spots in the woods and two pictures of my clover. It’s defiantly higher in side the fence. It’s 5 plus acres of clover last night I counted 22 deer in clover and 8 in my salty knob plot. Is it just a gut feeling on how many to take per year or is there some logic to it? Thanks for any advice.

Have you ever tried a deer survey? There is some math behind it. It can give you an estimate of the number of deer in a given area. Could help with the decision of how many to shoot.
