Pa Hillbilly Farming

I will soon be in the market for a case 650 to 850...need something I can pull with my 3/4 ton for commercial work and can use here on the farm.

Oh boy. That’s a load for a 3/4 ton. I’m crazy and I don’t think I’d do that here in our mountains. 650 I think weighs around 18000 lbs My opinion instead of a 18000 lb dozer I’d look a cat 299 ctl. It’s 12000 and pretty versatile machine. My buddy has a new holland dozer. Xl 85 I think maybe 75. 18000 lb machine. I wouldn’t trade him my cat 259d for it. My D6 does probably 5 times the work of his new holland in same time. But It not as easily to move as his. Just my thoughts on it though. I diffenitly suggest try before you buy.

My dozer guy pulls a 650 case with a 3/4 ton ford and a heavy triple axle trailer with great trailer brakes. I had a 1 ton duality but with a 5.9 Cummins but it wouldn’t pull like my 6.7 Cummins 3/4 ton truck as far as power. It was heavier in weight which would help though...

Since I had 2’-3’ of fill on back side of pad I drilled 6’-8’ deep. Which made it hard to clean out the dirt at bottom of holes. I made me a tamper to remedy that and I also made me a rock breaker for my fence post which I did need for this project too. Mennoniteman I’m sure you would get a laugh at this.

The cool rainy weather has really helped green things up and get the animals moving. Bear muzzle loader comes in Saturday but you can’t take bow and gun. It’s either or. Our commission gets so close to doing things great. Went to our area CWD meeting last night. It was interesting. They have a lot of proposed ideas to drastically reduce herd numbers. Yet all captive deer farms are under our Ag department regulations instead of game commission. Amazing how much politics there is in this world we live in.

Lumber company was to bring all material on Tuesday since the road construction isn’t completed yet. Yesterday they brought door headers they didn’t have made yet. I got a call mid morning “I’m stuck on the curve”. Ran down to give him a tug with with the tractor but figured I needed something bigger. Then I didn’t have the hubs turned in on my bucket truck. Wife almost had it stuck. Then I decided to take water truck back to work. Had to unload it or it would’ve been stuck. I will have the road completed and stoned by end of next week. These days don’t move the fun meter up very much.

Fun Meter? Dude you get to play with more equipment than most will ever see in their lifetime! That alone would be a Very HIgh Fun Meter to me!!!

Yet I understand how frustrating it can be when your trying to get things done and the Muck shows up and ruins all your plans.

That's a new invention for the polebarn industry, you need to quick put a patent on it before some mennonite steals your idea. Your project is looking good. Mud is always present at construction sites.

Drought for 8 weeks till we start the building. Went from dust and cleaning the undercarriage with a gloved hand to mud and 1/2 hour of shoveling with a track shovel. Thanks again for you input and help with the building Allen.

Your gable end posts look like they're to short, on a polebarn they are usually designed to go up to the roofline in one piece, that is part of the engineered design that the diaphragm bracing is based upon. You may want to check with the truss design person, you might need extra bracing in the roof truss system if the trusses were designed for a typical polebarn.

Good observation. The trusses and all material were made and supplied by our local supplier Berlin Lumber. They only sell 24' post so the laminated pieces were figured into the design.

The shed is coming along. Got a nice age class of bucks growing. Got some mature bucks running around and a lot of nice up and comers. The shooten coup should be functional enough for my mom and dad to hunt out of Saturday

Wow, Lenny! you really makin' it hard to keep up with the Joneses. Seriously, that's a great bit of carpentry work building the shooting house on top of your pole building, I can't wait to inspect it. With your resourses and skills you could make a rock rake. My cousin has one for his excavating business and it looks like a simple build.wd-10h-9-616x493.jpg

This year I made a rotisserie to do our turkey on instead of our usual earthen oven. Turned out great. Wednesday night we did beef in it. No bucks on the ground yet but everyone is loveing seeing all the nice bucks walking around all day.

Everyone has been letting the bucks walk. Have been doing our normal doe management. 10 of our 20 are in the freezer. My shed with the shooting coup is done till spring.

I like the coop! Is the nighttime buck reacting to camera flash? As far as letting bucks walk, we select maybe 2 of the 4 biggest ones for shooters and let the other 2 grow, assuming they're mature 8 point or bigger, as big as the one you have pictured, the theory being that we want to fill a few buck tags every year, and if we never shoot the biggest ones poachers or neighbors just end up getting them and that can lead to a never ending cycle of never filling any buck tags.

night time buck has came from another neighbor about 1 mile away. He hit it with arrow earlier this year. Where fur is fluffed. That picture was not reacting from flash, he was with about 15 other deer, night before opener of gun. The 4 1/2 year olds we have are mostly 10 pt so trying to let them walk. We have some big 8 that would be shot if seen. Our place has seen least amount of hunting pressure this year than ever before. Our resident deer are now getting to the 3-4 year old state. some of my friends how have come to shoot deer have elected to pass. say they just enjoyed seeing all the doe and bucks just walking around in middle of day. The acces that I have changed to get from and to the stands has been huge I believe with why we are seeing so much activity through out the day time. Goal is 2 per day till end of gun season this week. suppressed and long range the deer do not even leave the field when shooting. when dark drive up with tractor and pick up the deer. I am just waiting for habitat season to up start in 6 weeks.. LOL
