ozone questions

Two seasons ago I built a homemade ozone set-up with a cheap ozone generator off Amazon and a tote. It seemed to work, and this year I upgraded the ozone generator to a more commercial style generator that puts out way more ozone (my thought was to run short cycles rather than leave the little one plugged in all night in the tote). I was such a believer in the abilities that I changed how I do things and threw a stinky t-shirt in the tote and blasted it with ozone. After a couple attempts the armpits still smell. So, now I'm left trying to figure out what are the limits of ozone for killing smells. Before, I never would've tried this I would've washed the t-shirt in a tub with scent-free detergent. I thought massive ozone amounts would eliminate me having to wash it but I'm finding out that's wrong. What are your experiences with ozone's abilities to eliminate odor from hunting clothes? Also, with the new generator's increased concentration the ozone smell takes a lot longer to dissipate off of clothes, and it's a very distinct smell. Seems to defeat the purpose if you're in a hurry. Wondering how the deer react to those Ozonics units in the tree putting out that smell?

I can only answer to your last question. Ozone does have a smell deer notice, but IMO, and by observation, they don't seem overly concerned about it. Even hogs, who are more concerned about odors, again IMO, are not overly concerned about the smell. This was proven to my satisfaction a couple weeks ago when I had two large hogs come from behind me as I was in my homemade blind. They were obviously downwind and only a few feet away. One went on either side as I sat on pins and needles waiting to be busted. Never happened. There was some grunting, but none busted out. I got to stick one in front of me a couple minutes later.

As to using Ozonics in a tree, I think it's futile if you have swirling winds or high winds, but I'm a 100% believer in a blind with a 5/10mph steady wind.

Thanks for feedback drycreek. I suppose if they don't associate the smell with humans or danger maybe they don't spook. I assume that any odd or unnatural smell would put them on edge but that's why I wanted to hear from real world experience. I'm with you on the futility of hanging ozonics in a tree. I don't blind hunt but do you have any respiratory affects from breathing it after a sit?

No I don't. If you're using it properly, you won't breath it. Any time the wind switches, and I smell ozone, I rotate the unit. Easy to do in a blind with out giving yourself away, not so easy in a tree. The only way I'm hunting in the open is on a high place with consistent wind. I may still use the Ozonics, but that won't be my primary defense, the wind direction will.

I use it from a tree and it works great even in swirling winds. I am a firm believer in them myself because of first hand experience. I bought a commercial one to treat my clothes and trick and occasionally use it in rooms of my house. It works great and I can turn my whole closet into a scent crusher closet lol for $50. The deer can smell the ozone from the stand but they will acknowledge it but then go about there business

I bought one a few weeks ago. I thought I would try it on hunting clothing and some musty smelling rooms in the basement. Now I'm a little embarrassed. I don't usually fall for stuff like this. I think I wasted $70. My family dislikes the smell of the ozone. One said it reminds them of furniture polish. I don't think it's an unpleasant smell, but it's definitely stronger than my normal body odor with good hygiene. I don't know why anyone would think smelling like furniture polish in the woods would be less alarming to a deer than light bacterial odors. Some good personal hygiene is about the best we can do fellas. Anything more is futility, in my opinion.

Well, this morning was the first time in a tree stand after using an ozone generator on my hunting gear, and I think it worked pretty well. Saw about a dozen deer and although a few seemed suspicious, none bolted or foot stomped. One doe with triplets knew something was up and bird dogged my trail straight to the tree stand (maybe it was the cow patty I rubbed the boots in) . She stood under the stand with her nose in the air and walked around the area for about 10 minutes before wandering off. One hunt doesn't sell it to me, but no complaints either.

I have been happy with using it on my clothes. The units that were bought have a max run time of 30 minutes at 400mg(IIRC). We would use the totes after getting back from hunting and then again in the AM while getting ready to go. Everything I have read says, that if there is mud or blood, it needs to be washed. I stuck my, never washed, 2 year old make boots in the tote(I wear them ALOT) and they came out 30 minutes later smelling fresh, which is pretty amazing. I hunted with a borrowed unit for the tree, but didn't really notice any difference. Of course, I was sitting with the river behind me and the wind in my face 98% of the day. I would use it in a tree again and have confidence it in, high or swirling winds. Just take 2 batteries as the unit only has a 4-5 hour run time at max speed.
