Just starting a thread here for the Okies who want to give input on what they are seeing.

I went out yesterday morning and a quick hunt in the evening. I was skunked in the morning, I was surprised to not have seen anything but I was deep in some timber and couldn't see more than 50 yards in most places. I didn't get to my stand until close 6pm for my evening hunt. Busted a couple deer going in. Otherwise nothing else doing.

It was a beautiful day for bow opener. Anyone else hit the woods?

Oh...as far as what we are seeing...

Saturday morning was a bust because I forgot my arrows and had to go home and get them and then I just sat in a marginal stand that is better for rut because it was very light when I went back.

My wife was on our lease and saw 3 bucks and 4 does. Biggest was a young 8 point she decided to pass. She didn't know we could shoot does on the lease so she never tried for one.

Neither of us hunted Saturday evening.

Sunday morning I hunted our deer lease and I saw 3 real good bucks out of bow range and 2 does and a fawn. Only deer that got in range was a doe...

Sunday evening I didn't get to my stand here on the hollow until after 5:00. I saw 3 does, 3 fawns, and a small 8 point and then the buck I killed.

Deer movement is very good so far...

Great Buck Okie! I went out opening morning and saw a really skin-and-bones doe and yearling. They came in to my barely-growing food plot @ 09:30 and my feeder was bone dry after filling 300# of protein feed only a few weeks ago. Not much drawing them in I guess....wont go out this weekend as I am traveling....Good Luck to All.

Thank you...
Do you have any acorns this year? We have very spotty acorns here on the hollow so the plots are taking a beating and with little rain that is tough on them. On our deer lease we are covered up in acorns which for us always makes for better hunting there...

Acorns are spotty, but we were in the southern part of that little drought band though...they are really hitting the feed heavier than past years so I do believe there is some food shortage.

Seems like most trees here around skiatook have little to no acorns. I did see a cluster of trees today that was pretty well full of acorns. I've seen very little movement in 4 hunts so far. Maybe I'm just getting unlucky, maybe stand placement this year just sucks lol. But I'm thinking they are holding close to the few trees that are loaded with acorns and not straying far from them. I just need to find those trees lol.

I didn't see any movement on opening day in the morning. Hunting buddies killed two 8 points that night, both were 3.5+

I thought I would see a ton of movement on Friday and Saturday after the front, but I barely saw any. I did see one deer running like an antelope and as I was putting my bow away and making a bunch of noise I saw two more which of course ran off before I could reload.

This morning I had a stare down with a nice 8 pt, which he won. I then sat along a fence row in some 6' johnsongrass. I had one coyote come within 2' feet of me (scent control for the win), and after about an hour, I got back up. Another coyote jumped up about 10' from me and just stood there looking at me. I figured hey hunt is over might as well shoot, and when I did, my crossbow exploded. Arrow went about 10ft. Coyote still standing there and I had nothing to shoot it with. Didn't get the kill but it was an interesting experience.
On the way out I bumped 2 bucks and a doe. So total I've seen :
Opening day - 0
Friday - 1
Saturday - 6
Sunday - 5

None of which were in bow range or I was being dumb and moving too much. This weekend doesn't look much better for temperature but as is I do not have a bow so I'll probably just go back for vengeance with my coyote buddies.

My acorn crop also sucks overall. I have noticed it is better down in the McAlester area, a bunch of red's produced this year. I have also noticed movement in the fields as virtually stopped and I've seen them running towards the hollows where all the acorn trees are at.

Do you have a vertical bow as a backup?

Bummer on the crossbow but it seems to happen a lot with those...

Nope. My neighbor has one for sale that is a pretty good deal but I don't have much time to practice . Same with muzzle loader. It's going to cost me $50 to ship back to Barnett, but they will replace it. I'm still out of commission for a few weeks .

Well, that's a real bummer...was it a string failure?
