Ohio Farm Tours

Good job buckhunter. Your hard work is showing, and I am glad when you report of some help you get from others. My new pumped comes from the smile I see on the grandsons face, anticipating the hunt, and enjoying it. I get a smile when my daughter tells me over the phone "The boys are SO EXCITED about going hunting"

That is the best thing to hear! I cannot wait to take a few youngins hunting! Not to mention, I think we need to thin a few does, should be a good time had by all!

Well - no major updates from me. Deer season just ended in Ohio and I have a good friend of mine coming to the farm the first week of March. We will shed hunt and lay out a plan for the new farm. Very excited to plan new plots, set certain areas as sanctuaries, plan areas for stands, etc.

My hope is to have a few large destination plots (one will be down in a bottom due to terrain) the rest are going to be on the top of ridges in hopes to allow our best hunting opportunities.

I got my soil tests kits ready to go
minerals are ready to go
Clover/Chicory will be frost seeded this weekend
2 oaks and 4 chestnut trees are going to be planted this weekend
Also will shed hunt a bit!

Time to go to work! The off season is here boys!

Jealous of your conditions. While I have been able to do a little shed hunting when we get a thaw, anything more is a dream here in the north country. We are set to get 18” of snow this weekend. Last year’s predicted 24” turned into 40+ so I’m crossing my fingers....

Wow it’s still chilly at night but we don’t have any snow in forecast which I am plenty happy about at this point.

Well it was one heck of a weekend -

We have planned all the deer plots out (5 new plots will be going in)
We found a couple sheds which was nice as well

I am probably most excited about finding an old apple orchard on the new part of the farm. I would say there are 100s of trees in this bottom. The deer trails are like I have never seen in my life - below is a picture:

That is a beautiful sight/site!

Chainsaw, I thought of you - I have a lot of cutting to do to release some of these trees. This trail is near a great apple orchard but I bet we found a few hundred apple, pear, persimmon, and even a chestnut trees on the new farm.

I know now, where the deer were hiding when I wasnt seeing them! haha

Got to spend time at the farm this past Monday after working in WV for a day. Have a few nice updates, i took a walk and found a decent shed about 60 yards off a plot. This was of course on a ridge, next to a stand that I havent hunted in 2 years!

One thing we have noticed on our farm is a major increase in does - which we are happy about. We have really laid off them for years. We are now excited to start taking a few next year.

Here is just a neat series of pictures that show the same plot from planting till now. This is about an acre plot, you can see the browse pressure on this from the deer.

This was taken around first weekend of Sept.

Same plot around Nov/Dec:

What keeps me hooked is the planting plots, running cameras and planning for future. That’s really what I love about all this jazz!

Agreed! makes passing them young bucks a lot easier when you can enjoy the deer action and the results of all the hard work - and when we or a buddy - cash in - its really fulfilling - Great looking plots!!

Thanks for the commment!

I have enjoyed really taking pictures of the same fields throughout the year. Seeing the amount of browse pressure is really amazing!
