Oat seed from spring planting

I had planted oats and RC into last seasons brassicas plot for spring and summer coverage. I never cut the oats (not sure if i should have or not) and today i brush hogged the plot and there was a lot of dried oats with seed. Should i skip the oats from LC's grain mix for this plot come Labor Day or should I go ahead and re-seed with the oats I have for planting?

Good question. I guess it depends on the amount of free seed and the viability. Should have grabbed a few seeds and took them home to see if they will germinate. One issue though is there is a good chance since you mowed the seeds will germinate by labor day. If you till then you will kill the new oats seedlings.

From my experience from living in farm country, "volunteer" crops such as small grains will not do as well as direct seeding. Dogdoc also made a good point. If you work the ground they will probably have germinated and it will kill the seedlings.
