About a month ago we brought home a new pup and this little guy requires several miles a day to keep him happy. So after wearing out the scenery around home I recently decided to do something else for kicks. Our county’s plat map is on an online GIS program, so I use that and Google maps to look at pieces of public ground. I look at the layout, access, neighboring properties, etc. and then pick where I think I’d find buck beds. Then pup and I go out and see how we’ve done. Our archery season goes to January 6th but no one is on these properties after muzzleloader season closed in early December. A couple of things doing this has made me realize:
No one told the deer this is public ground and that they’re not supposed to be there
Technology is just crazy, when I started hunting if you wanted to know what was out there you wore out some boot leather. Now you can really let you pick apart a property and key in on spots from a laptop. Either because of familiarity with a property or the tech not existing before, I’ve never scouted property from a computer before this (probably the last man standing there). Our topography is pancake flat which makes it easier I’m sure.
Hunters around me are lazy, there seems to be very few guys willing to go much further than 200 yds from parking to hunt.
I admit I wouldn’t have given much thought to hunting the public ground around me given the pressure it gets, but seeing that the pressure is concentrated to the easily accessible areas I’m probably going hit it for some early season sits next year.
