New Heritage HC

Looks like a good shot. How far did she go from the shot? My buddy has lost 2 to arrows on the lease....blood just ran out. You just happen to know the dog tracker? We could have used one for his two deer!

That's the only way I clean my deer. I actually get all the neck and belly meat so I can average 33% or more yield; up to 40% on a buck.

There is a whole group of Trackers all over the state. They have a Facebook Group called Florida Blood Trailing Network. They list their numbers by the County you need a Tracker in.

If you ask to join the page, they usually accept you in pretty quickly. Then you can post the need for a Tracker on the page and also start calling from their list.

There was about 5-8 listed for Washington Co. All I was able to get in contact with were already on Tracks. The one that was the closest to me was on her way to Alabama to help track a deer there. 2 hrs each way plus the track. That’s dedication.

The next day she came and did my track and was talking to another person on her phone about another to do when we found mine.

As to how far she went it was further than I would of thought with the shot. There was a bit of guts you could smell and a touch was oozing out the entry hole. The exit you could see the lung with the sliced from the broadhead.

The only thing I can figure is that these Florida Deer might have their diaphragm further forward than the Northern Deer I’ve shot. I’ll start holding slight more forward.

To completely answer the question of how far she went, since we cut across and didn’t take the route she and the dog did, it’s kinda a guess.

I would say about 15 before she turned right. Judging from what I could see of the dog 50-60 before she turned back, then about the same as a guess before she dropped.

So like in the range of 150 yards.

I walked twice through the block where I thought she would be and didn’t see her. She had crossed into the next block and I was probably 50-60 yards from her and never saw her due to how thick the Older Rows are.

Looks like at some point they came in and cut trees then skipped a row then cut trees skipped a row and so forth.

That thick row is what she crossed and it hid her completely.

I never would of gone that way as I thought she went the other.

Congrats on all the success! Makes the long sits go by faster when you are seeing deer.
Thanks!

And a LONG SIT it was. Seriously. I was in the stand at 5:15 am. It was supposed to rain about 11:00 am and it never got there until 1:00 pm and it poured once it got there. Never left up until 3:00 pm.

Saw the Doe and she was the FIRST Deer of the day at 4:38 pm. So about 11 hours and 15 minutes.

Well my SIL was up to hunt the Buck or Doe Days at our place. That was only the 2nd time he has hunted there this year and only the 3rd time overall (helped me set some stands).

He didn't see anything and I could tell by his text when he was leaving he is very disappointed. Made a comment that I must of shot all the deer.

While I won't say it to him, I feel you get out what you put in. Last year he only hunted a few times and always on the Food Plots I put in (that he said was a waste of time and money) and lucked into two deer. He acted like he was a "super hunter". After I shot my small buck this year he wanted to make a bet as to who would get the biggest buck this year, I said no I didn't want to turn what we had into a competition.

I've done most of the work on the Property. Cleared the shooting lanes, tilled and planted, mowed, learned the Property BEFORE the Season opened. He wants to show up, then walk all over the place "learning the property" during the Season then complains about not seeing anything. I feel that if he stopped putting his scent all over the place and spent more time in a Stand instead of going from Spot too Spot he might just maybe see something.

I started this Place to share what I've learned with a guy that had no hunting background and pass down the Hunting Heritage. Hard to teach someone that already feels he knows it all, haha. I hope that as time goes by maybe he will get more involved in "the process" and become a well rounded hunter.

Back at the NHHC for another hunt.

SIL is starting to learn the property more and after seeing the difference in having vs not having the Food Plots in this year had got onboard with planting them next year.

That’s a BIG step for him as he thought they were worthless and corn feeders were the way to go.

Seeing the difference in the “field” where he shot both of his deer and this year there is almost nothing going on there he is learning that maybe the Ole Man might know a thing or two.

So far this trip I’ve seen deer but no shooters.

I didn't give a finished report.
First Evening there I only sat for a couple of hours before dark and saw zero. Next day was an all day sit and saw 4 deer including a Spike right at my stand and another Huge Body Deer that had horns but crossed the opening way to fast to get on. Next Day at a different stand had a group of 4 Doe and a single doe just before dark.
Last morning was only a few hours sit for zero.

My first year there it was a success to see 1 Deer per day. This year seeing an average of 2-4 deer per day is getting better. I got one more trip up to see what the season brings.

We did find some nice scrapes in an area we haven't set stands in yet. We plan to set 2-3, but do no clearing, in the area to give us more options.

Had to Call It for this year hunting trips.

My wife's Father, who lives with us , has taken an extreme turn for the worse. His COPD has finally caught up with him. Hospice has been called in and it is more Important for me to be here for Her than to be in the Deer Woods.

Family is coming in and out. Of course they all think they know what could be done better for him and each thing they do "makes all the difference", at least in their minds. Good part is it gives Her and I a break for a few hours, Bad part is her having to listen to How what they are doing is better than what she is/was doing.

Sad that She/We have been taking care of him for over 3 years and no one hardly ever visits, but now they know what is best. Just hope they all manage to get along to the end.

Hate that for you guys Deadeye. Life always takes precedence as it should. And yes, whoever is doing all the work suddenly has many telling how it should be done. Have to let it roll off but hard to do. Prayers.

I always have issues with those who think their 4 per cent of contribution is more important than the 96 steady, rock solid. Happens in so many areas of life, and end of life. Bless you, your wife and her Father. Peace and Comfort

Well I’m back to thinking about hunting again.

Lots have happened since Dad got sick and passed.

With the COVID crap both my SIL and Daughter have had their jobs changed. His was eliminated and he had to transfer to another place with hours that are going to make it hard for him to be able to get up to hunt at all. The Daughter’s hours are least for now have changed and no idea when that might go back to normal.

Main thing is their babysitter is an older lady that now refuses to watch the kids for fear of getting COVID.

So it’s been Papa and Grammy when she can to the rescue.

Just started into this deal so not sure how it will all work out.

I missed any Spring Plantings and will still try to do a Fall Planting and move one stand to be able to see better where I’ve noticed most of the movement is.

Ah Life. Always throws you a curve.

Season Three Begins.

I’ll start it off by saying sometimes I have doubts that the SIL will continue with the lease after this year. Already hearing statements about no deer last year and if he doesn’t get some this year then he probably won’t continue the lease.

Also told me today that he can hunt a friend of his property for free in SC so that would be cheaper, even though the license would be about the same as his share on the lease. Up to him, but I will miss him for sure.

In any case, I’m moving forward with what I got. I’m feeling better physically than I have since before the C Treatments began. Lost total of 40 lbs since that ended. Blew me up like a bullfrog. Haha.

I’ve been up and worked on the food plots and after setting in the Bottom Stand a few times, I now know where they are traveling much better. Going to move that Stand/Blind to a new location that will allow me better vision of 4-ways of travel instead of just 2 that sort of can see.

Storms hit the camp and took down the old tent i was using as a shower tent and his tent he left up and didn’t cover. Mine came out OK with the extra tarp over it but that will probably need replacement by the end of this year.

Which by that time I’m hoping to have found a decent used Camper to place there. This Old Man is tired of no AC to cool off in during the summer work months and freezing cold in winter.

Couple of pics. Used the Groundhog Max Disc again and it did pretty well. I’ve learned to adjust it as needed for depth and it’s working much better.

The Ramps lifts the rear up 4”. I can then adjust the Max by selecting the pin hole I want.

Usually 4” is perfect to start. Real loose soil I ease it up to 3” or so.

Then set it at 1” to disc in the seed.

Seems to be working great.

Well the SIL came up to work with me moving a stand and worked his butt off cutting shooting lanes. He did real good, best efforts I’ve seen from him.

So hoping that trend will continue. We have talked about older deer and pressure on them and how they react. I think some of it got through.

His dad died when he was young and no one ever took him hunting. He asked me to several of years ago. I guess I’m so used to doing what needs done I sort or expect that same effort from everyone. I need to remember to take a step back and think of how it was when I first started. I read everything and tried everything that anyone said until I figured out what really worked and didn’t. That is where he is at now.

He’s a good man and a great dad to their kids. Couldn’t ask for a better SIL. I just need to give him Time to learn and Understand what is happening around him in the deer woods.

Today he worked in the heat until he puked. I told him “welcome to the NHHC summer work days.” Left him rest and when he was ready go back to camp and get in the AC.

I got a Confession to make. I used to be the most easy going guy I knew. Then something happened in a way I didn’t agree with and it has been there bothering me for years.

I found myself angry at very little all the time. I had very little joy or peace in my life. I even spoke to my wife about it.

Then one day while working on our house I heard a song, a song I’d never heard before or have since. It was called “I Forgave it all”.

I thought of how nice that would be and then that old memory came back and I just couldn’t do it. I asked the Lord to help me with that.

About 2 Days Later, I was ready. I Forgave It All.

What a relief that was to my soul. That burden had been hanging onto to my thoughts and life for years. The person didn’t even know that I felt the way I did, and it was within Family.

Crazy thing is, that person called me that day and said they called just because they wanted to hear the sound of my voice.

Since then the Joy and Peace that has came back into my life I can’t describe. Things that were bothering me don’t anymore. I do loose my temper some but nothing like it was before.

I’m telling y’all this so if there is one of you still reading this and you needed to hear it, well there it is. Forgive It All. You’ll live a better life I promise.

We moved a stand today.

I didn’t get a lot of pics, but here is the Deer Trail they are using to get through the brush row

Pretty heavy use eh?

Where the stand now sits looking back at it from that crossing.

3de8c3f43efee6f84d8dc5cd2b3ebc43.jpg

About 20-25 yards.

From there the trails split but all cross over through then cross over the Trail into where the stand used to set.

I sat there all day last year and deer were crossing that trail but they were just in my sight and no warning.

Now we can see almost 360* and have several locations where we know the deer go through that we can see.

Might be early but I called it the Kill Zone Stand.

Good luck this year...it would seem I should be more prepared than ever having semi retired in July 2019 but then I got busy making money being my own boss and I am harder on myself than anyone else ever was! Hopefully your SIL will get into it like you want but if he doesn’t just realize priority is different for different people. I have 4 grandsons and I so wanted one who liked to hunt and drag race like I do but I don’t think it is to be. Times are changing and gaming and the newest phone or app seem to be all the rage...

Very well said and thank you for the encouragement. I could see myself taking the same path without constant checking. I can’t imagine any fella being good enough for our girls.

On November 1st got these pics of Spotted Fawns.
She
Must of got bred late for them still to have those.
