Needing to vent.

What do you do when Mother Nature unexpectedly turns your power off?
Best thing we ever bought was a stand-by generator powered by natural gas.
Well I had a good day today, only out of power for 1:40 hr/min. It just so happens the supervisor of the job was a neighbor near my cabin who I met when we did a wounded warrior hunt at my place a few years ago. He installed a shut off on the main line so my power could be back on quickly. I do have my electric guy coming to look at what we can drop off of power for a genset back up. I got a price for a 19 year old diesel generator that was just refurbished for $400,000 that would run everything or a new smaller one for $325K if I drop off some equipment.

Yikes. I guess its apples to oranges to compare a household backup generator to what you need. Ours can run everything...2 furnaces, all appliances, AC, water well, everything. Runs on natural gas. But it was only around $5k. Nothing like what you require.
Care to share with us what you need to power? Sorry if it was already mentioned and I missed it.

I have 45 welding machines, plasma burn table, brake presses, shear, and air compressors that have 45-100 hp motors on them. I think we counted 5 600amp services here the other day when salesman was here for genset. I am also looking into a Methane digestor since I have a small sewage treatment plant here. the family dairy farm was one the first in our state to operate a digestor for the manure, I am looking into that combined with other municipal waste for a green waste regenerating processes. I am surrounded by windmills but they will not let me plug a big extension cord into one..I am not one to complain about spending money if I have it as long as it fits into my criteria= 1. it makes money 2. it goes to a good cause 3. it is fun... A genset that cost that much for the few days i would need it is hard to justify the ROI. Im looking at other ideas to help justify the expense.

Those are steep costs to prevent that little downtime. I'd get a slick lawyer to force them to shut the power off during non-work hours, or at least schedule it in advance, so you can use that time in other ways like a team meeting, morning off, training session, mandatory drug testing, inventory, shop cleaning.

We did clean up and inventory. when you turn 50 guys loose you can get alot of things swept up and cleaned up. the 4 th is a paid holiday and I gave Friday off as a little perk not knowing we were going to lose another day of work this week. Same day the elec company said about the shut down I got notice of a health care ins premium increase i guess that was the straw that broke the camels back. Im never one to rant or complain but I just squealed like a school girl stepping in poop...

I have a good friend that has a machine shop with that stuff. Not gonna lie he has back up power. Works crews 7 days/wk and holidays at double+ time and can't afford any uncontrolled shutdown. Enough of those issues can happen regardless.
Glad you were able to suck up to your friend and keep losses to minimum. Honestly thats why I keep everything from cops to road workers to power to water guys to politicians than owes me from past favors. A phone call or two and my issue is attacked. My power can go off and its back up to speed only after the local hospital is restored. Suck up pays off. Good luck, running a private business is the best and toughest thing a person can do. Now if I can just get my employees to quit contributing to the population explosion, I'd be happier. But they work their asses off, so no real complaining, just whining.
