Need help with tree id

This tree grew at the edge of an old well. It recently fell and I'm wanting to know if it's a hardwood (firewood) or not. No leaf pics as they were all dead. The trunk is all I have. I'm thinking hackberry but just not that familiar with them.

Based on the picture I would agree with hackberry. Hackberry tends to have a dark purple to grey heartwood with a real light sap wood. The wood is also very fibrous....as when you split it it won't want to split cleanly.... Burns fine. If it was already dead....you may or may not have much usable wood to work with.....

It was not dead but it did appear to have been hollowed out at the bottom where it broke. Windstorm took it along with some huge limbs off an ancient oak:(. I've got to cut it up anyway to get it out of the way as it is blocking a road. I'll take when I can get from it and it'll likely burn in the fireplace.
Thanks for the help
