Moultrie Cameras and iPhones

Hey everyone:

I’ve got a few Moultrie cameras and I use an iPhone 8+. I have one of those lightning to SD Card adapters and last summer was able to import photos directly from the card to my phone. However, now I can’t and I think I know what happened.

When I put the card in the camera and format it, is uses the FAT32 file system. My phone (and my MacBook) will now not recognize the card. I wonder if this was a change from last summer.

The camera manual says to always use the camera to format the card..... But does anyone know whether the camera will work with a card that’s formatted to NTFS? All my cameras are >30 miles from home so I don’t really have the time to experiment and see what happens.

So if anyone is in this spot, what do you do? I don’t want to have to carry a laptop, but I’m also kinda cheap about buying one of those viewers. Suggestions?

Is your sd card reader an original Apple product?

If it’s not, then that very well might be the issue. I believe that one of the recent iOS updates have made it so the non apple products will not function.

What kind (brand?) of lightening to SD card reader? I have a generic that sometimes doesn't work. It depended (no additional app) on the iOS operating system and we know how often it changes versions. So, I got a "BoneView. It's a little more expensive but more reliable. It requires an app, the i-FlashDevice. I can look at pictures without importing to my phone. The FAT32 works with my iPhone 7. I think, although I'm not sure, formatting a card in a camera does a "quick" format. That just means it erases the File Allocation table and not the entire disk. I always, first, do a full format of the card on my computer. And, you know, cards do go bad.

Yep, I think this is it. I took the card, copied the pics off, then reformatted to NTFS and put the pics back on. Phone still wouldn’t see the card. Pretty sure I just grabbed something from Amazon, so I bet it’s not an Apple product. Will give that a try. Thanks!

A guy I know uses an older phone he has as a viewer. It’s a droid so works with any card. I’ve had issues with iPhones and cards before too. Can be a pain. iPhones vs droid is another war thread.

So I have new news to report. I got myself in the habit of formatting the card in the camera as soon as I put it in the camera, so that should solve the file system questions.

As for my Mac not reading the cards that are FAT32 formatted, that was a red herring. My card reader on my Mac is apparently going bad. When I use an external USB card reader, they came right up.

And yes, as stated above, my iPhone 8+ will not recognize my non-Apple adapter. So I’m either going to have to buy a card reader with a display to take with to the woods, or use an older iOS device. We have an old iPhone 5 that should work, and my son has an iPad mini that should work also. But I kinda dislike have to actually import all the photos to get a look at them.

So in short, if someone had a recommendation for a cheap card reader, I’d jump on it. But since I have these older devices that’ll do the job, I’m too thrifty to part with a bunch of money for one.
