Local apples

So there is a local guy who posted semi-dwarf apples (different varieties) for sale at $10 a piece. They are 2-3 years old and 6-8ft tall and he will dig them up and deliver for $10, so it sounds like a great deal. Looking for disease resistant, sweet taste, and late dropping date. Here are the varieties he has listed..."honey crisp, fuji, gala, mutsu, cameo, enterprise, pink lady, candycrisp, staymen, winesap, macintosh, nittany, and spartan." Any thoughts on which variety I should get for both human and wildlife consumption?

My biggest concern would be the varieties resistance to fire blight. That stuff SUCKS.

The first 5 in your list are from the pits of Disease Hell.

Enterprise is a great one. It's relatively late too.

McIntosh is very susceptible to scab and FB.

Pink Lady is very susceptible to scab and FB.

Candycrisp - no experience or knowledge

Staymen = same as first 5 above.

Winesap is very susceptible to scab and FB.

Nittany - no experience or knowledge

Spartan has some problems with scab and canker but average or above on other diseases

How does Enterprise taste? I've got one on its 4th leaf this year, but so far no blooms even to pinch off. It's been a very good grower though.

Merle, mine is also young and hasn't set fruit yet. However, most all reputable sources (including Purdue) rate it high in DR except that it does seem to have some issues with powdery mildew in some climate venues. I was willing to risk that and give one tree a try. I won't plant any more until I see how it does here, however......

So the guy contacted me and he is digging the trees up and delivering soon but if he can't get them to me by this weekend, I won't be able to plant them right away. These are 6-8ft tall trees so what is the best way to store them until I can get them in the ground? I'm only ordering two for now as there is a ton of work to do on my new property but hopefully I can get more next year.

Do what you have to do to get them planted where you want them as quick as you can.
