Live from the stand 2021

Back at it by the old home place. There has been a lot of evening activity according to the camera, we’ll see I guess.

Rusty, we’ve had antler restrictions for 6 years now. It’s made a real difference.

Elk,

That’s very encouraging.

What WMU is that ?

I realize that the restrictions are controversial, but after 2- 3 years of restrictions, when everyone is harvesting 8 points, the controversy tends to fade away.

A buddy of mine took a doe to a local processing facility in Lewis County. He said the number of spikes and crotch horns in the pile made him sick to his stomach. The funny thing is, once you harvest a small buck, he stops growing.

My property is a prime example. There were three “shooters” this year on 400 acres. All three have a been harvested. Today’s card pull ( after the 3 shooters were gone) showed a substantial amount of chasing, but they all involved small bucks. However, those small bucks will eventually turn into big bucks, so that’s not an issue.

Anyway, personally, I’d love to see NY get in line with PA in terms of harvest guidelines for bucks. From the little I know of PA hunter satisfaction, it seems that those folks are liking harvesting mature bucks.

I didn’t do live this morning but I should have. With all my health problems I haven’t hunted nearly as much this year as I usually do. I saw more deer this morning than any day this season. Two bucks and four does. Of course the bucks weren’t big enough to be legal although one of them was 3.5 IMO. We have a 13” inside rule and he was borderline. My place is 80 acres and most of the deer come from the surrounding places so if I get a shot at a legal 3.5 year old he usually winds up in my freezer. This one was lucky !:)

The evening sit yielded one unknown deer in the brush and three different groups of pigs. Probably saw 40 pigs in all three groups and none were adult boars. All were sows or pigs. I killed one for sure and two possibles. The one was downed in my plot and the other two were crossing a narrow lane. I didn’t look for them, the buzzards and the coyotes will find them shortly. That may seem off putting to some, but they are a scourge in this part of the world. They have affected our deer hunting, they root up everything that attracts their attention, and I see more dead hogs on the road than deer. A 150 lb. hog will tear the bottom of a small car up. Those forty hogs I saw tonight will be eighty in a few months. :(

I’m in 4G. The results are real. On our 207 acres, we typically have a half dozen 41/2 to 61/2 deer. I usually harvest one of them…. Old deer are just tough to fool. I figure they’re nocturnal for all but a day or two during hunting season.

Filled my 2nd doe tag during our Thanksgiving 4-day rifle opener. Also got some great footage of tracking my friend's deer. Watch until the end as I finally got a shooter on cam! Off to a great start....never had my doe tags filled this early.

Fall is absolutely the best time of year, and this is my favorite deer picture of the season. I am just as happy with a knife in my hands as with a bow. We've got some nice horns this year, but the backstraps off of this fat doe are going to be much tastier than those antlers.

Ended my buck hunting this year at 8:15 am. I had been hunting my property every time I had a favorable wind but as with every year at this time you start realizing how small 90 acres is when you have 6 guys on 2 sides set up along your fence which runs through solid woods so it’s not an instance of the only cover or the only place for a stand due to crops or fields. The guys on my north side drove all the way through 225 acres to get to the back fence...lol. My hunt on Sunday morning was so discouraging when I had a button buck in front of me and then he headed toward our north fence and 3 shots rang out followed closely by 2 shots on my fence on the east side...I loaded up and went south to my old deer lease. My trail camera there had shown me one possibility with a photo I got late at night on the 26th. I hunted Sunday evening and saw one small 5 point buck, I hunted Monday morning and saw 13 does, I hunted Monday evening and saw a small 4 point buck and then I went out this morning and about 7:00 am I had a doe walk by at 60 yards acting funny with her tail straight out...I figured she was in estrus so I kept sitting...sure enough at 8:15 the deer I was after came along and I took the 60 yard shot with my old 30-30...he went about 25 yards...

Congratulations on ending your season Johnny. Good job with the old 30-30.
