Live from the Stand 2018

Saw a really nice buck tending a doe in my creek bank this morning, being harassed by two smaller bucks. Gun season opens tomorrow...

Didn't see anything this morning so I changed clothes and made the short trip to meet my son at college and have lunch. I'll be back at it this afternoon and then again tomorrow for the gun opener.

Ice snow and wind storm yesterday. Power was off. Thank good for generator.
Wasted trip this morn as everything frozen including my safety rope. Scary climb on icy steps and stand. Gotta do it for the deer I guess. Had one shooter let him pass. I know who I want.
Afternoon thawed out and deer were everywhere w bucks cruising this east west ridge where my nosebleed stand is. Acorns everywhere deer so random. Running out of time as I’m not much for rifle hunting.

Cold morning in the NC mountains. Light snow, low 20’s with a 20 mph NW wind. I watched several young bucks dogging a doe, worth the trip!

Live from the rant couch 2018.

Today is the official kick off of gun season. Meaning the locals can now legally show off their buck kills. Plus there's a ton of tailgates dropping since this coincides with dog season too. I'll be driving around shortly listening for any hounds that's been turned out on my place.

Naturally all of my paying, non-working members showed up. But it's ok. I stuck to my guns. I only planted the plots that I bow hunt. Shooting houses haven't been cleaned out, no chairs, etc. I am amazed that no matter how much I talk with people it is always like this. I'm sure I'll get the "cull buck text" here shortly. I was going out this morning with Collin but plans changed since it's his Papaw's birthday. Good luck to everyone

Rifle opener...wrong wind for best spot so instead of ruining a great thing I am at a backup locale. Legal shooting light 5 minutes ago and heard 3 with the first one 10 minutes before. No mast crop whatsoever so with very few food sources I expect a record harvest for ok.

Good luck everyone!

Opening day of gun season here in VA and I heard a lot of shooting, but most of it was off in the distance. A few dogs were running but those were a ways away too. Only movement was a lone spike that came through about 9:30 so I decided to come down around 11:00 and set up a pop up blind for me and my daughter for next Sat (doe day). Last year was her first ever hunt so I gotta get her some more woods time. I'll be picking up a 2 man stand for next season.

I’m done deer hunting but needed some therapy this afternoon. Rest the soul of any yotes taking a stroll.

You're doing the Lord's work there Native. My buddy and I were hunting this morning and I heard him shoot twice, so I figured it was either yotes or hogs. He came back with a coyote tail....a black one. He's killed a bunch, but this was his first black one, and he had to shoot the dang tail off !

Yesterday evening was a bust with only 2 turkeys seen. Wind has changed so day 2 will be here on the Hollow. Wife had a big buck in our back yard tending a doe but couldn’t they got into the woods before she could seal the deal. I would rather hunt here than anywhere but I will not compromise the wind in this big woods setting...good luck everyone!

Back at it this morning with my son. Had 2 coyotes come out early. Shot one. Hopefully we didn't disturb too much. These bucks are bedded close by. It 35°F this morning. Have the heater going since my back is killing me. I'm thankful for comfortable chairs and the ability to stretch my legs out. We can only hunt until 9:30am before we have to go to church. Wish us luck

Passed a buck I call kicker 12this morning early. He has busted his rack up some...

Saw 14 turkeys and kicker 12, a 4 pt, and a young doe...so far. Blustery N wind and rain...

Moved to a blind at our south plot from the stand because I didn’t have any rain gear on. I keep a heater in this one so I fired it up...My Sunday employee called at 8:45 and I took the call in the blind. She is the only one I had scheduled to work 8-4 today and she said she mean’t to call me at 6 and tell me she was sick but she fell back asleep. She works ER so it was pretty important for her to be there! I had to call my on call person from the blind to get her headed that way but she lives an hour away...I hate phone conversations from the deer woods...

As soon as I hung up a this year doe fawn came into the plot.and was eating and a few minutes later she looked to the south and I looked over and saw this nice 8 point enter the plot...he worked some edge scrapes and left after about 10 minutes. The fawn is still in the plot...

Gonna have to call an audible this afternoon-between Thursday’s ice storm, and an inch of heavy wet snow, my switchgrass is flat! Guess I’ll have to go beat the same tree to death. Man I wish we’d get a wind change. I’ve really only got two spots for this northeast stuff.

That bites...I know what it’s like to have a bad wind. We had it yesterday from the S/SE. Today we are N/NW which is perfect!
