I just passed a shot at the deer on the right in this pic. I’m after the other one.

Just passed a very nice high 130-140 10 point...he came in checking some does feeding in front of me...
Okie, I'm happy for you; You and Native are in hunting environments most of us could maybe realize but for now it is hard for us to see it or even dream of it. Thank you both for sharing your hunting with us; it raises our goals for our individual properties and fires us up to make them better.

Snow, colder than a witches tit and 40mph winds. Always fun in a swaying trees. Slow day. Still waiting for my 10 that only seems to want to pose for pics.
Bet no one else have their deer welcome them as they pull into the farm?? Gotta love it. And you wouldn’t believe some of the crap they ate after leaving my purty planted fields.

First afternoon in NC. It’s COLD here!

Had a doe and two fawns directly under my tree for over an hour, too close for pictures. Saw a few other deer further off but no big bucks.

First sit in my Tethrd Mantis saddle, I’m really gonna like this system. Although a heated blind did seem like a better idea towards the end of my sit!

19F in the morning.

Been trying to get down for about a half hour but every time I see a window another doe ambles up with bucks in tow...

14 deg what’s a man to do. Yep climb to back ridge on south facing slope and soak up sun like the cervids w 4000 ft mnt wall staring at me.
Crazy morn. Had 5 bucks and 10 does. Hard time passing on 2 of them. Waiting for mr 10. Stand must b too perfect as all the deer are walking under me. Must be my ozonics. Oh wait I don’t own one.
Did have live decoy for 2 hours. Dang thing kept me from eating my pepperoni rolls warming in my pocket.

Got to love those live decoys...

A few does and a spike this morning, nothing tonight. Rain headed our way for the next few days. Time to test out my tree umbrella.

What a day...7 bucks seen this morning and all within bow range...nothing tripped my trigger so they all walked. Went out this evening and sat a stand with an iffy wind about 30 yards in from our south plot. Was just enjoying the cool evening and all of a sudden heard a chase coming but it was coming from directly down wind. The doe ran into view in the woods and I saw a large body and thick, wide rack following. It was an oh crap moment and when you see a deer like this you do not start filming with your phone... the doe stopped directly behind me at 15 yards and the buck stood behind a huge white oak directly down wind. Both of them knew something wasn’t right and he moved toward her a few yards. Somehow I worked the crossbow I am having to use over an arm thick limb that comes out of the tree about shoulder height while I am sitting and got him in the crosshairs but even though the scope was on him the actual arrow was going to have to go through some limbs that were directly in front of the arrow tip from the same tree I was sitting in. No way I was going to risk a wound. The deer got extremely nervous and bounced out about 30 yards through the trees and then the doe bolted back the way they came and he went with her back to the north.

No pictures ever of this buck and he reminded me greatly of the 24” inside spread buck in my avatar that I killed here in 2014...

After the deer left I was just sitting there amazed and kind of down but I got over it pretty fast when I thought of how much great luck I have had while deer hunting in my lifetime and the fact that our rifle season opens next weekend...then “bang” sounded off loud enough for me to jump! The shot was south of our place on a ridge top at the same level as we are. A few minutes after the shot I heard voices, then a few minutes later I heard a truck driving over there and then it stopped, dropped tailgate, loaded something, slammed tailgate, more talking, then started up and ratttled down the hill to a paved road in the bottom...I hate a poacher the same as a thief because that is what they are! Happens every year over there during the week before rifle multiple times... :(

What a weekend. After finally getting my 2017 buck back from the taxidermist this past Monday and then finding out that a neighbor had shot the buck I had at the top of my wish list, I had experienced a few highs and lows heading into the gun opener Saturday morning. Wasn’t sure what to expect although there were a couple of new bucks on camera the past week or two that I had not seen previously.

I settled in about 30 minutes before daylight after managing to get in to my stand without getting busted. Had only been good light about 30 minutes when a doe popped out of the woods and headed across my field. She was being followed very closely by one of my new guys. Didn’t have much time to think about my decision so I had to move quick. Grabbed my rifle, dialed down my scope, and tried to get it on him. He came into view and immediately stopped because the doe did. That’s all it took. With that shot, my buck tag for 2018 was filled. What a great morning.

Had another good deer come by about 5 minutes later on the trail of the same doe. Didn’t give a second look to his buddy down in the field. So thankful to be able to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

Hope everyone has had or will have a great 2018 season. Be safe out there.
