Live from the stand 2017

Day 2. Yesterday was miserable 40mph winds. Saw 1 deer. No shots from neighbors. Today is a beautiful day. Hunting the main plot this afternoon.

Day 2...40 mph winds yesterday and calm and cool today. I saw 10 does and a spike and a young 10 point I passed on this morning while he was chasing a doe near me. I am high on a mountain in deep timber...same place I was this morning...

Poppa finally made it to a ladder stand in Mandy Hollow. I love fall beauty. Crisp. Grandsons got does so I really don't have a need to shoot....Unless

Still at it...deep woods, top of mountain, south breeze 10/12 mph and right around 60 right now with dropping temps...saw 3 does being pushed by a spike this morning and then on my way out here for the afternoon hunt saw 2 does at one spot and 300 yards further saw another 3 up and moving at 2:30...

First sit I think in 3 weeks. See if anything is coming to the plots yet. There were some large tracks coming in. I hunt this property without running any trail cameras during the season. It's always a fun surprise. Makes me have that feeling when I was a kid before cameras and such

My personal deer hunting season ended at 7:30 am this morning. I was sitting in a stand we call "Texas Field" because we have to walk across a rocky prickly pear and cedar infested opening to get to our stand tree. It is the perfect setup because the prickly pear field is a deer free zone and I am only walking about 25 feet into where the deer zone is. I was using my old lever action 30-30 and yesterday I shot a few Remington Core-lokt bullets and it was dead on at 50 yards. I had 2 boxes of Hornady Lever-Evolution 160 grain bullets and I shot one through it and it printed very close to my other group. My friend who also shoots a lever action Marlin also shot one but his printed about 12" high at 50 yards. I made the mistake of deciding to load the rifle with 7 of the Hornady bullets for this mornings hunt.

At 5:30 AM I am in my stand well before daylight and with a slight south wind in my face I had a deer walk by 5 minutes later I could hear but absolutely could not see...

At 7:15 am 2 does worked their way down to me from off the mountain and went to a small waterhole in the creek to the west of me and drank and then worked their way back toward me. They got to the spot I had crossed the little dry creek and got nervous when they smelled my ground scent and they started circling behind me. At this same time I look up and see my target buck walking down the same trail the does came in on and he was about 130 yards out when the does got around downwind and started blowing. I would like to say I threw my gun up and smoked him but it was actually more comedic...

The deer turned and I tried a quick shot. At the shot he turned and ran to my left and stopped about 150 yards out with his vitals behind a large tree but I could see blood on his back legs. I aimed for his neck and fired and saw a limb blow off a tree on the way. The next shot barked the tree he was behind and the next 4 shots hit nothing but dirt I guess. I was beside myself at that time with an empty gun...I quickly grabbed the 5 spare Remington Core-Lokt bullets I brought since I had shot all the Hornadys I had and I watched the deer lie down behind the same tree...a couple minutes later he is on his feet and walking across to my right. He stopped in an opening and I sent a Remington round on its way. At the shot he bucked and ran straight at me and crashed about 100 yards from me behind a large blown down red oak. I sat and watched for 15 minutes and saw no movement and got down and eased over to where he had fallen. The last shot hit the sweet spot...

Great shot of the buck on the four wheeler, absolutely Top Notch. Congratulations on the best season I have ever heard of. All of the deer you have harvested this season are just beautiful.

Should I?

Looking back I wish I didn't but I did. Like Okie it was calamity of errors but left me with a lot further drag out of the woods. Upon release of my arrow my bow made a noise it never has made before. Which let the doe jump the string and duck leaving the arrow stuck in her neck exiting the field. No crash...."Well crap" I thought to myself. Called my buddy with one of the best dogs in the South. While waiting I packed up my stuff and set back. About 15 minutes after the shot 3 more does came in the plot and began to feed almost exactly where I shot the first one. They fed for a few minutes then bolted. "What in the world"? Thought they caught her hoof scent and ran. Went back to scrolling the forums. Looked up and there stands 2 shooters 50 yards in front of me with about 2 minutes of legal light left. I couldn't do a thing. Tried unzipping my bag to get my release out and knock an arrow but they knew something was up. Ended up turning and leaving.

Fast forward. Buddy comes up with his dog. Dog lines out. We follow. About 50 yards into the woods she is pumping some blood. Dog runs, 100 yards, 150, 200, 300, 4, 5, 6, 1000, 2000!!. "Well crap" he's running her. Then the dogs gps collar goes in and out but doesn't move from that spot. We finally catch up. The dog has drowned the deer in a lake. Well the lake isn't on my place so I go to the owners door and introduce myself and tell him the predicament I'm in. He was kind enough to let me retrieve the deer but that was it. Wouldn't let me borrow his boat. That water was cold and I don't swim as well as I use too. Then the owner said have fun dragging her out. Because he didn't want me rutting up his pasture. Forgot a knife to gut the deer so we dragged that doe 560 yards back to a gasline for me to walk the other mile and a half back to the truck to drive the 15 minutes home to go get my four wheeler that was out of gas because my nieces road it all day while I was at work. No fuel in the cans because my father in law just filled up the mower. Winch the four wheeler onto the trailer. Drive 10 minutes to town to get gas. Head to get my deer 25 minutes away. Guess I drained the battery winching the four wheeler onto thr trailer. No jumper cables (honda rancher 420 doesn't have a pull rope) drive 15 minutes back to the house. Jump the four wheeler. Drive 15 minutes back. Get my deer. Load back up. Drive back to the house. Get pulled over by Mr. Green Jeans because I have a deer strapped to four wheeler at 9 o'clock at night. Checks my license and hears my story. All good. Get home. Finally got her skinned out 5 hours after the shot.

Needless to say I'm picking up needle point or something.

Not so bad Pinesapjunky!! I was waiting for the part that alligators chased you out of the lake or a giant pike or catfish thought you were food or something. Seriously though, Congratulations on following thru after a bad break. It was probably a good thing the landowner didn't let you use his boat or drive thru his pasture; we can only guess what else could have happened. So what was the mysterious bow noise that was the catalyst for this great adventure? Did one of the limbs hit the stand or something?

I checked with my wife and she confirmed that of all the sewing activities, needlepoint is probably the safest.

Sad to say but I'm afraid the mysterious bow noise was my heart breaking. My lower limb on my 7 year old Destroyer 350 finally decided to de-laminate. Bowtech doesn't make anymore replacements. I will have to look into the Barnsdale limbs or a new bow. My bad luck streak doesn't stop. If I would of known my bow was about to grenade I would of been good this year and asked Santa for a new bow. But I've been on the naughty list for 7 years since I bought my last bow.

If you bought it new, Bow Tech should do something about it, like replace it. If you bought it used, well..... SOL.

Brand spanking new. I've talked with a rep last year about finding new limbs when I started reading reports of having the same problem. They will give a discount on a new bow. That's about it.

Arrived at the stand at 5:50am. Cold 28 degrees. We planned on an all day hunt and that was what it took for Mollyann to score. We both took a few naps while the other one watched. Buck came out at 5pm and she made the perfect shot.
