Kaleo Hills-Property tour

Just entered into a contract to add an additional ~12 acres that join our east border. This will get us about 285 yards of a main ridge top and access from another paved road. Fingers crossed!

The big bodied 8 point from posts 139 and 147 (night picture) was killed by a neighbor in early December. The camera that picture was taken with is only a few hundred yards from the place he was shot. Happy to see that particular neighbor selectively targeting mature deer.

21,

Did you manage to secure the other 12 acres?

I did, we close Monday. Surveyed 13.023 acres which brings us to 172 acres total. I’ll be out in a few weeks and will take plenty of pictures.

The new 13 adds a critical east access and will provide good leward hill bedding areas.

Congrats! The additional access should be a great benefit for you.

I’ve got 16 apple and pear trees coming from the Wildlife Group in March. Hoping to get all those in the ground and weather permitting clear a little ground.

I have a few areas picked out for chainsaw work (bedding) if I have time left.

Can’t wait to get back out there!

Well, I didn’t have time to go fishing but did accomplish more than expected this trip.

I hired a neighbor with a dozer and trackhoe for three days. They increased our food plots from one at .6 acres to 3 with a total of 2.5 acres. Old skid roads were resurfaced and new roads pushed in for better access to the entire property.

16 fruit trees arrived from the wildlife Group (10 pears, 6 apples). My mom and step dad drove up and helped me plant them. It turns out a truck makes hauling water much easier.

We added 1800 pounds of pelletized lime to new and existing plots. Again, it turns out that equipment makes spreading lime easier. My neighbor was kind enough to spread the lime with his tractor and 3-Pt spreader.

I spread 4 bushels of WR and 50 pounds of MRC on plots and roads.

I speed scouted the new 13 acres and pulled all 10 camera cards that have been soaking since November.

New access road going in. This road connects new 13 acre parcel and provides access to a new .25 acre plot.

Newly cleared ridge plot. This ridge was logged in 2013, brushy young forest surrounds the plot and should provide a feeling of security for wildlife. A nice patch of white oaks are the East border of the plot. I plan to cut paths through the blackberries at the south end to promote cruising travel paths downwind of the plot.

Looking south.

Looking NNE after trees were planted. We planted 9 pear and apple trees here.

New .25 acre plot. This small plot is within 250 yards of the new larger plot. Easy access will hopefully make this a good plot to hunt on and around. We planted 1 pear and 3 apples here.

This plot went in last September. We increased it from around .6 acre to about 1.5 acres.

You can just make out newly cleared ground above the plot in this picture.

This .25 acres below the original plot is home to three pears. It’s pretty steep and may become a fruit tree orchard. Small saplings and blackberries were left to salvage topsoil and prevent erosion. I have 17 trees coming in April, this May be their home.

This is the area cleared above the existing plot.

This 1.5 acres is mainly designed as a destination plot but could be hunted a few times in the SE corner.

The fruit trees arrived in great shape although the pears were a little small.

Typical pear tree roots:

Very impressive apple tree roots:

This 8 point became very active in late November. My neighbor shot him with a crossbow on December 1st chasing a doe.

I didn’t measure him but he’s a low to mid 130’s buck. Really nice deer for our area.

This 9 point is a really good deer too, he’ll be a great deer next year, assuming he’s still around.

Really cool find. I don’t see many Pilated woodpeckers around but they’re here.
