Kaleo Hills-Property tour

It's official, we closed on the neighboring property Monday; we're now managing 159 acres. Can't wait to get out there next week and look around!

More pictures coming over the next few weeks, we’ll be camping in the property for a few days. I have 6 cameras soaking and will be placing an additional 4 out next week.

Excellent week with family and friends in the mountains! This was the first trip the family got to see leaves on the trees, what a difference a few months make. From 10 degrees in December to 85 in July.

All 24 Northern Whitetail Crab and apple trees I planted in early May leafed out and put on impressive growth. This crab was a single stem whip 2 months ago even grew an apple...yes I pinched it off. The 4 inches of rain a few days after planting certainly didn’t hurt!

Your deer and bear will love the poke salad. I've jumped them from a few yards in the stuff. Gets the old ticker going. Place looks good.

Yeah, “poke salad” is highly preferred on our place in early to mid summer. With all the clear cut areas they can’t keep up with it all. These pictures are adjacent to a deer trail. These specific plants won’t likely grow beyond 15 or 20 inches.

From a work perspective I got maybe a full day in for the week. I was able to completely post all 4 sides on the larger parcel and everything on the road frontage. This includes 2 “no dumping” signs that could very well encourage those that need to be told in the first place.

I was able to trim paths through and around my tree planting’s, this will be an annual requirement to avoid them being swallowed by forest regeneration. My daughter helped me label about 75% of our apples.

The family experience was great. The last time I had the family out there it was 10 degrees and we didn’t spend much time in the woods. This time they all got to hike the hills and we spent one night camping. Great memories!

Just worked thru this one and Wow! You have a great place with lots of diversity. looks like the kids are having a good time as well!

Now - how on earth did you come up with a plan to move from what many would consider paradise of Hawaii......to, well.....a different sort of paradise in NC?

I grew up in the Carolina's, Hawaii is just my latest duty station. It took years to decide where we'd end up when this career was winding down and a long property search in one of my favorite corners of NC revealed this property (the original piece). We had many places on our list, mainly out west. Idaho and Montana were at the top of the list and Alaska wasn't out of the question. Just felt this particular property in a really cool area was too good to pass up. It's only a half day drive from family which was also factored into the decision.
