It’s all about timing

20 seconds slower and this came down on top of the tractor. There was zero wind, not a breath. The tree actually uprooted. It was a weird old split trunk cherry. I had a mental picture of it knocking me backwards off the tractor and getting run over by the disk....that’d be a helluva way to go. Might start wearing the seatbelt now. As a flat lander I’ve never really felt the need.

Hoosier...You never know! Close encounter of the worse kind. Speaking of seat belts...I have gently rolling terrain. No really steep hills or inclines. About 4 years ago when I almost tipped over by a rookie move of having too much weight in the FEL and it lifted up really high while turning, I vowed that I would never again operate my tractor without first buckling my seatbelt before starting the engine.

It only made a sound because you was there! I have a widow maker in my woods right now. It's a pretty good size ash that broke in a storm and is hung up in another tree......part of me wants to mess with it this winter....the other part of me says to just leave well enough alone and stay out of the area. It's plenty big enough that if something went wrong it could really hurt someone.

It would drive me nuts having my bar on my saw flipped like that...I'm not OCD...but that would bother me.....even though I have put my chain on backwards before....

I have a widow maker that I avoid in the woods too. Hoping Mother Nature will take care of it for me someday but it’s hung up so good it’s probably there to stay. I flip the bar to distribute wear on it. Will make your bar last longer. I can be pretty OCD about some things too though.

Cherry trees are the devil incarnate ! I had one break and fall on a dozer years ago. There was a ROPS on the dozer but a power line behind me and the tree fell on it and the dozer cab at the same time. It was the Fourth of July ! That blue lightening was dancing all over the dozer and popping like a .22. I sat there about 30 seconds contemplating death by REA and just stuck her in gear and drove out from under. Probably the most scared I’ve ever been in my life ! Upshur County Rural Electric guy said I was supposed to be dead. Seventy-two thousand volts ! I told him that for a minute there, I thought I was going to be....

I’m guessing he is doing that intentionally like I do to keep the bar wear even.

That’d make it run down your leg for sure. That sounds absolutely terrifying.

I rotate mine every other tank of gas also.

When we were in the Timber Industry, I was running the Skidder and my Brother and one of the workers was falling the trees. As I was backing up to grab another load of Logs, I was looking over my Right Shoulder, when Something told me to look the other way. When I looked to my Left I saw a HUGE Tree falling down and coming RIGHT AT ME!! I had time to switch into Forward and mash the Pedal down. It still hit on me, just missing the Cab, landing on the Cable Drive.

The Worker had been yelling and waving his arms as was my Brother who had dropped the Tree. I never heard them over that load Skidder. I just laughed about it, and that just made my Brother angry. But all was well.

I also watched a large Oak swing on the stump and land on a set of Electric Lines. They bowed to the Earth, but never broke, then launched that Tree like a slingshot skyward. The Giant Blue Ball of Flame that ran between the Lines was like watching an Arch Welder work. It got Bigger then Smaller as the lines touched and then came apart again. Finally it broke free and went flying down one of the lines until it went out of sight. I could feel the Power the whole time as I was only a few feet away as it happened. Crazy.

I've also been out in the woods and heard a Tree just radomly fall. I always think "what if I had been in that or by that when it fell?".

Twice now this year I’ve seen a tree come down with no wind. I always looked out for overhead widow makers when setting a stand but now I pay even more attention to what’s around the stand.
