Is this elm?

Just trying to figure out if this is a type of elm? According to what I've read they like moist bottomland soils which is where this pic was taken. There are a fair amount of them around and I'm thinking they would make for good hinge cutting trees.

Any other pics of the bark? Looks like it could be ironwood
That's the only pic I got but I always thought this was ironwood...

That is “musclewood”, Or sometimes called “blue beech” I guess I have seen some refer to it as ironwood as well because it is so hard. Scientific name is Carpinus caroliniana.

What I am referring to as ironwood in my earlier post is American Hophornbeam:

Does it look like this at all?

I zoomed in on a couple of the hinge cut pics I have and the bark doesn't appear to be as long and "stringy" looking as what's in the link. It's possible though. I'll try to take some close up pics next time I'm out.

Thanks.

The pic in post #3 is what I call ironwood, blue beech or musclewood. The pic in the original post could be an elm as there are several different ones. To my knowledge there isn't much deer use of any of the elms..... IF it was in my woods I would call it an elm and treat it accordingly. If it's not causing an issue then not a big deal....if it's crowding or shading something better.....buzz, buzz goes the saw.

Looks like elm to me. Elm is a tremendous hinge tree. I have a very high success rate with my hinged elm.
And my deer love it. They heavily browse the leaves and buds of the tops of hinged or dropped mature trees.
Coppused (sp?) Elms stump sprout really well.
I'd run out and take some pics, but I'm laid up in the hospital right now.

Good to know! Thanks!
