Is this a Complete failure?

Planted a brassica mix in mid July. Mostly rape and purple top turnips. Looks Ike heavy browse pressure already(approx .10 acre). Also area flooded after heavy rains. Should I start from scratch? I have a blend of winter rye, wheat and peas with some brassicas I can use. Or will
It rebound/ broadcast and pray for rain?IMG_2752.JPG

Looks like you need more food or less deer. If the deer are using it, it isn’t a failure. You just need more.

Throw that grain mix on that in the next couple wks. No prob. You fed the deer and will continue to do so.

If you're on limited plot space, think about going down the desirability scale. If you've got third, fourth, or fifth choice forage, it has a better chance of being there longer, which is especially good if you hunt later in the fall. I don't get too excited about having brassicas or beans by me, cause they'd be gone before I ever put put on my camo.

Rye is a little too far down the scale for me, but ample clover with green oats fit the bill perfectly.

I never thought about it like that. Provide something they will eat but only as food disappears! Great idea for someone with less acreage.

In my area, the food quality scale slides from 5 star steakhouse to closing time at an $8 buffet in about 30 days. I finally got this dialed in a couple years back and it's made november hunting a lot of fun.

I’ve got a brassica plot I had to kill because Lambsquarter swallowed it. I’m planting a heavy rye/red clover mow and throw this week. If we are not completely covered in early deep snow, a thick rye plot is very attractive. Oats would be of no value by the 11/21 opener (bow season is another matter).

Lol. I get the more food or less deer part. What should I do to remedy that plot for the more food option?

Sorry, I replied while I was on my “lunch” break at work. I was trying to eat and read/answer post. I would overseed the blend you have into your brassicas. Depending on your zone, wait on a good rain in the forecast and seed that morning or the day before.

If it's only a tenth of an acre, not sure it will be there come November if it's being browsed that heavily already. The deer rarely touch brassica and rape here until the first frost, then they mow the greens down. I would add more seed and 50 lbs of triple 12 or triple 19 just before a good rain. Adding a pound of white clover (Ladino or dutch works well here) can't hurt. The fertilizer will allow you to maximize production on a small plot. Regardless, sounds like you need more food/bigger plot.

Lotsa good advice here. Let the brassicas continue to grow and feed your deer, interseed oats, wheat and rye to help feed the deer.

If you could enlarge the plot would be best. Then add what you have otherwise you need to plant the things that can take the most grazing. I like clover, chicory, oats and rye.

Thanks all - that .10 area is one of about 4 food plots on the property total about 2 acres. Always striving to add more. Time is the limiting factor. Property 3 hrs away.
