Introduce yourself

I lurk a lot and post a little - sometimes feel like a "hit and run" poster, so maybe it is appropriate to at least introduce myself. I was a member of the 'old' forums for 4-5 years, but only rarely posted there.

My name is Neil, I am 42 years old, married for the last half of those to an awesome girl I met in college, with two daughters and a son (13-18 y.o.). We live in central PA, where I grew up on a dairy farm. I grew up hunting groundhogs, all kinds of small game, and whitetails, and fishing the trout stream that meandered through our pastures. My mother died suddenly when I was 22, and my dad sold the family farm a couple of years after that. I hunted PA public land exclusively for years, plus public land in several other states - WV, MD, MO, VA. KY ... and a couple of western hunts. Archery hunted until about five years ago when back/neck issues forced me to begin using a crossbow.

We bought 88 acres in northeast KY in 2012 - quite a journey that led us there. Even though it is 7 hours' drive from our front door and we don't get there nearly often enough, owning and working on that land has been a dream and a blessing. A good friend from our area in PA purchased 120+ acres near ours in Kentucky at the same time we bought ours, and in 2013, we partnered with him to purchase 70 acres that lies between our two properties. He added about 30 acres in 2015, so between the two of us we have a little over 300 contiguous acres. Of that acreage, about 45 acres are in soybeans, and we each have some small plots.

I love hunting with my kids, running trail cameras, planting trees, hunting most anything, fishing, and traveling. I am a civil engineer by education (haven't sat for the licensing exam and don't plan to), have been the construction manager for a small commercial/industrial construction company for 21 years, have done taxidermy on the side for years, and am heavily involved in my church. That last phrase really should be first, as all I have is His, and I am so humbled by His grace to me!

Really enjoy the information exchange here, and especially like following along on the property tours you folks share. Since I live so far from our land, I am reluctant to start a tour of my own, but maybe I'll take the plunge one day.

Welcome to the forum. You have great priorities, church, family, hanging on to a good job. And getting away sometimes to your own special piece of real estate.

Hello everyone. My name is Lee. I live and hunt on 30 acres in Western WI. I purchased my land in 2015. I grew up in Vernon county, WI and hunted some pretty good land during my youth. I am 31 yrs old and have a wife and a 2 yr old daughter than cannot get enough of the outdoors. She grunts when she sees deer and collects acorns in the yard. If we are inside she stand and looks out the window and repeats her version of the word outside which is "side." My wife also hunts, but its difficult for both of us to hunt with a young child. I work as a Quality Engineer in Twin Cities area (Medical and Defense work). Because of my career, I usually am way too particular and critical of things - including my habitat management. My passion is archery hunting for whitetail. I also love to gun hunt deer, turkey hunt, trout fishing, camping. Spent lots of time on snowmobiles, boating, basically anything outdoors.
Growing up, I was never taught hunting strategy. My dad basically was in the mentality of find a spot in the woods with deer sign and spend a lot of time there until you get lucky. After buying land and researching deer hunting and habitat improvement tactics, I quickly absorbed a wealth of information and now understand hunting is a lot more than just luck. Habitat management and seeing the changes over time has become more exciting to me than hunting and trail camera pictures. I still get the uncontrollable shakes though when a big buck walks into view! Also I am interested in networking. If there is anyone with land close to me, I would be game for spending a day doing a tour at each others land or borrowing equipment, etc. It makes it all the better to have people with common goals that you can share your experiences with.

Well, I guess I had overlooked this thread, concentrating mostly on the food plot stuff. Better late than never, Momma said, so here goes.........

My name is Don, I'm seventy years old, and I've been raising deer groceries for years, but only got serious about it the last 7/8 years I guess. I took my first soil test in 2008, on the 217 acres we bought the same year. Since then, I've tried to break out of the " grains in the fall " mentality, and offer " my " deer something year round. Now that I'm retired I have a more flexible time frame to do my plotting in, but less money to spend:), so I'm here to learn and associate with like minded folks. From my short time here, I think I'm at the right place !

Welcome drycreek. I am in your same boat. I think my first post was about how expensive is all this seed and fertilizer.

Are you the same Dry Creek from TBH? Welcome . Good to have more retired folk on here.

Thanks ! Guilty as charged. I was glad to see you on here too Rusty. I always tried to keep up with your ongoing thread on TBH.

My name is Chad Myers. I'm 36 and live in South Georgia. I have a 2 year degree in wildlife which taught me a lot about managing for many different wildlife species. I have a lease in Brooks County that's around 700 acres and a few other leases near my 700 acre lease. My family also has 2 farms in Cook County and 1 in Berrien county. I'm a firm believer in trying to let my bucks reach at least 4.5 to 5.5 before harvesting, but it's not easy getting the neighbors to buy in. I've always been fascinated by Whitetails and love learning everything I can about them. I'm also very big into hunting arrowheads or any other kind of Indian artifacts. I also enjoy shed hunting and watching my bucks grow from year to year. I also have a passion for growing and planting trees and plants.

Arrowheads, planting, growing, watching the deer herd... This is the difference between a true outdoorsman and a one dimensional deer hunter.
