Hunting show host caught poaching

The trouble is, these buzzards (not the word I wanted to use) seem to land on their feet most of the time and they are terrible examples of legal and ethical hunters. I stopped watching most hunting shows 5/6 years ago and stopped watching the few remaining not long after that. In my mind only two or three are actually representative of how (and especially why) I hunt. Staged scenes, wounding shots, (yep, put it right in the boiler room:eek:), emphasis on inches, obvious high fence hunts passed off as free range, the list is endless. I have nothing against high fences or big antlers, but just call it what it is. Most of these “hosts” would make good used car salesmen.

I was eager to watch hunting shows at one point in my life. I have nothing against them and honestly kind of envy the travels and opportunities they can have through their work... but I haven't watched one of them in a very long time. In fact, my wife canceled our subscription to The Outdoor Channel around 10yrs ago and it took me a year to realize we didn't have it. More power to them for getting to live their dream but the pressure felt to turn to poaching must make hunting not much fun anymore.

I remember seeing the footage of it some time ago... I don't watch the shows any more....I feel it only feeds the uglier side of our sport. I also felt that many where only interested in selling you something and put false ideas and the like in your head. I stay away for the shows and the glossy magazines now and simply do what works for me and interact on a few forums with some guys who got some dirt on their hands. I'll take a 140" buck I had to bust my but for on my own place over an 180" giant that someone else did all the work and I simply killed any day!

Wasn’t it a “faith based” show and at one point he curses out the cameraman, and the guy eventually released the video to the public so everyone could see what a hypocrite he was? Pandering at its best. I hope he gets squaids.

Shame. The pressure to perform has screwed up many a person.I echo what others are saying about hunting shows. I just don't find anything about them interesting. Wish I did. And I wish there were shows that covered all aspects of the wonderful world of deer and habitat mgt. Used to like Chuck Sykes but don't see him anymore...not that I look.

I did host Ralf and Vikki. Cirincurella SP??? from the Archers Choice down to my ranch once and will confess I found them delightful and funny. Was good experience though there will be no more TV shows hosted by me anymore.

Gonna date me but when I was a kid in the early to mid 60s wasn't much better that watching Curt Gowdy's American Sportsman on Saturdays. No TV hunting shows for me anymore. I just got turned on to Deer University podcasts put on by a couple of deer professors at Mississippi State University. Really enjoying what I've heard so far.

I get my video fix from Grant Woods and Bill Winke via email. Although I can’t plot in the manner that Dr. Woods does, ($ and hogs keep me from that), I still enjoy watching his vids. I especially liked the way that he always took his Dad hunting right up until his passing. I always enjoyed Winke’s show when it was on tv, but I like the videos even better. Same content sans commercials. I’ll never kill the kind of bucks he kills because they don’t exist in my world, but I can’t imagine he has any more fun hunting than I do.

I think, from what I hear and read, that lots of folks are drifting away from the tv hunters, but I guess they have a new crop coming on all the time. My concern is that youngsters (and maybe not-so-young) will watch these shows and have unreal expectations as to the success they should be having in the woods.

I must say that I do like Randy Newburg, all diy and all public land. You gotta appreciate his effort, but I have been so long gone from outdoor tv that I don’t even know if he still has a show.

Concerning American Sportsman, I fully agree ! It was on tv on a Saturday, and I would stay home to watch it hoping to see hunting instead of fishing. Nothing against fishing, but that’s a doin’ sport, not a watchin’ sport. I saw Robert Stack hunt elephant, Bing Crosby and Phil Harris hunt francolin and guinea fowl, and the creme-de-le-creme, I saw Fred Bear take a big grizzly with his recurve. Good memories !

Who does horn porn still speak to? I'd be more apt to watch if they taught something, or just made it a lifestyle show. I haven't watched a hunting show in years, so I really shouldn't comment given I have no idea what is going on.

But, the shows I enjoyed most back in the day (2004) were Babe Winkleman and the Management Advantage. I do still watch grant woods. I could care less about the turkey stuff, but I find the rest worth listening to.

YouTube and podcasts for me. Most of today’s hunting shows are crap, including this one. I agree with the earlier post, “tacky”. Unfortunately I’m not surprised having watched a few episodes.

What has happened is over a period of a few years and a Generation, Hunters have been Conditioned to Believe that all they have to do is Show Up, climb into a Blind or Stand and within a day or two a Huge Buck will come walking by. So the Reality Hunter finds that when that doesn't happen he quickly gets discouraged and goes home.

The Love of Horns and Inches has created another issue. Time was when you hunted for the simple joy of it and any Buck taken was a Trophy to that Hunter. Now if you haven't passed up a dozen or so "cull" bucks and don't have every Buck on your "hit list" named, you are doing Hunting wrong.

That last part might not set well with some on this forum, but that's ok we are all allowed to have our own opinions that may not match others.

There is no doubt that we could make an amazing hunting show based on the activity of this forum. Keep it grounded in reality. Pick the most popular property tour threads and give each owner/forum poster an episode. It could include habitat improvement, food plot experiences, putting up fences, etc and maybe a 10 minute snippet from a hunt. People would watch that.

There would be only one rule - no screaming, shaking, fake crying, hollering, or anything of the sort after the successful killing of a deer. That part of these “hunting” shows is so off-putting.

Sure agree with that second paragraph Deadeye. There was a Canadian show done by a guy named Cody that was on few years ago I liked. He did a lot of stalk and hunt with belly crawling on the ground and waiting for hours for the perfect shot or miss and photography was great and included lots of friends and family who were older or never hunted before. He got married and cranked out a pup and show disappeared after.
As for hunt shows I think they in part lost their glamour when forums like this developed with real people hunting real properties from which we can learn and contribute regardless of our status of buck killed or land owned. I haven't watched a hunt show for some time except some of the old kills shown on youtube. I can't do the pod casts which seem to be the rage with some on here as I'd just get bored. ADD I suppose.

I know (knew) Ralph, Vicki and Ralph's mom Mrs. C. from way back before they did hunting shows. Ralph had an archery shop in Berwyn, ll. outside of Chicago. Wonderful people! Always helpful. Mrs C. was the best !

I don't have a problem with naming deer to use as a reference when your trying to explain to your hunting buddies which deer you are talking about. I've done that. It's kind of like naming a tree stand. It just makes it easier to tell someone about the "Big Oak" stand vs saying " ya know that one stand over in the corner of that one field". I do believe that in the hunting shows it gets a little out of hand and I see that manifested in the younger generation when they talk about bucks they've seen. There seems to be a tendency to name everything "hercules" or "ba donk a donk". No thank you. Kinda reminds me of the end zone dance! But that's a rant for another day.
