House and Habitat build thread:

You have had a lot going on! The floor and bar look great. IF/when I do one I want to put glass over the top and put old pictures, adds and the like under it as conversation pieces. The kids have been busy too. Hunting turtles with a 9 from a tree stand...... I thought hunting the chickens with a bow was odd..... must be something in the water out there! Also looks like you got some nice deer as well. Pumpkins look to be growing well also.

You don't hunt turtles with a 1911 from a ladder stand stuck in a pond? I thought everyone did! Lol, we hunt everything and no method is left out. You know that song "a country boy can survive"..... If they want it, these kids can figure it out.
I have a few pumpkins but not many fruits, mostly vines. Not sure if I did something wrong or if I just need to be more patient. Hopefully something happens soon to get more fruits.

Thanks dogghr! The road is a common ride. They meet at a hole in the wall cafe in Cassody for breakfast, then cruise down this road to the Burden or Dexter area before looping around and heading back to Wichita. It's a nice hilly and twisty road. Let me know if any of those towns rings a bell, we'll figure out if you've been on my road before. Chances are you've been by my place if they do.

I ran a race in Germany once. I won, beat the defending champ, and set a course record. The race started at a castle on the top of a mountain, went straight down the mountain, and then zig zagged all the way back up. They couldn't believe I could run up a mountain because I was from KS and wanted to know how I train. I just grinned and said there is one little hill near my town.... EVERYONE in the world thinks KS it flat!
Usually swing across south of Salina down back roads on to Rt 400 into Dodge City. From there into La Junta in CO and down a fav road with no cars Rt 350 followingthe Sante Fe Trail over into Alamosa. Then when heading east usually along some desolate county road Rt 4 across KS. I always rag you but KS is a beautiful state especially while the wheat is maturing. And really nice when wind is anywhere below 60 mph. Hope to head that direction next year and make it to the Bonneville Salt Flats speed trials if they can get it going again. One of the forerunners in records there on modified motorcycle , Sam Wheeler, died in crash there last year trying to get near 400 mph. He had set speed records on bike since 1970 when he broke 200 mph. He had made it to 355 mph about 10 years ago but trying to reach that 400.. Yea he was 72!!!

No - I don't hunt turtle from a tree stand with a gun! We fish for them with a milk jug, piece of cord, a stout hook and a piece of meat. Or come the right time you can just pick them up along the road. I have hunted moles in the yard from a lawn tractor before with a gun though!!!! The vibrations drive the moles nuts and they move thru their tunnels....and then....Blam!!!! Hahahahah - little bastards! I guess we all find a way to entertain ourselves in one way or another.

So do you see the moles raising the dirt in their tunnels?is that how you know where they are. That sounds stranger than shooting turtles. But then again I live about 20 miles from cat.You ought to come down and shoot dillos in the spring.Beat my best record last year at 7 in one day with a pistol. You have to watch the wind and sneak up on them

Lol, I carry a pistol on my runs in the spring just to shoot dillos! It's a snub nose .22 revolver with shorts and super easy to run with in the palm of your hand. I hate those things but at least they are easy to sneak up on. 7 is a great day!

Same here about the moles. I've never been able to locate one for a shot. Sounds like fun though.

Cool trip and would be a blast to watch a day or two at the salt flats. Never been but have always been a hot rod junky so I would probably get a kick out of it.

Yep - you can see the tunnels in the yard (because typically the grass dies) and as you mow the tires on the lawn tractor flatten the tunnel closed or you go out and walk the tunnels flat. So as you continue to mow you see the ground moving as the mole pushes the tunnel back open. Then it's like a red-neck drive by. I've used everything from my 45 to a 12 gauge before. You can stop them with a shovel and then dig them up and flip them out on the surface and the dog will kill them, but then I have to worry about the dog eating it and then tossing it back up in the house.....eeeeeewwwww! I have to watch what I'm doing now - I have an electric line, water line and a LP gas line in the ground in the side yard.......I can't hunt moles there. I'll either kill the power, spring a leak or blow myself up!

Cool, that actually sounds like fun! I'll pass though and I'm glad I don't have a mole problem.

I guess we all have our own red-neck ways of dealing with things. We take a chore and somehow incorporate a firearm to put some "fun" into it! Don't have "dillos" here. I see them laying along the highway when I travel to the Bootheel region of MO. Goofy looking things.

I got a ground hog that needs dealing with as well.....another critter that is pretty worthless. Need to let the 22-250 send him a message.

I think most are almost done growing. The social aspect has changed a lot. What use to be a group of 11 bucks has turned into singles and doubles. Even the twins have moved away from mom some and been showing up in the clover without her on most occasions.

Our dry spell had a break this last week and it has been nice! Everything greened up almost over night.

The "orchard" is doing great!

Sawtooth seem bulletproof in south central KS but not so much Chinese Chestnut.

It's appearent that I've lost quite a bit of stuff with the hot/dry spell this spring and summer. About half of the Chestnuts that are still alive are yellow, not sure if they will pull through or not.

This fall's trees are doing well though and should transplant nicely!

And a pic of just plain old fun! Every once in a while you've got to pull out of the dirt and pull the trigger of something just for the fun of it.

Thanks Okie. Not sure exactly what broke, but the builder said he ended up having trouble with it.

A few pics of the shop getting started. Cement was done yesterday.

The cement crew did a great job! I like watching a crew that doesn't even need to talk to know what needs done. Everyone had a job and knew how to do it.

Oh, to answer your question; no rain for us for quite a while. We've had some around us but somehow it misses our place.

We are 22 days dry right now...10 day shows none in forecast...
Concrete looks good! I should be looking at some around February...still in savings mode with my brushhogging money.
