Just got home from Hibbing Mn. where I had the privilege of spending time at my buddy Dr. Harry Jacobson's cabin, perhaps the top whitetail biologist in the country. We were joined by Dr.'s Dave and Susan Guynn from the school of wildlife and forestry at Clemson. What a treat. We chased woodcock and grouse watching top flight dogs show their stuff. Beautiful country...but dang it was cold. It was 18 the morning I left arriving back home to La for 82 degree weather. Thoroughly enjoyed my time and the hospitality in Mn.

Northern Minnesota a a pretty place even if it is a little flat, although that area has some bluffs and hills and a lot of great fishing. And global warming will only make places like this better.

So...what was the best thing you learned?
What a privilege it is to have met Harry when I was about 25 yrs old. ... over 40 years ago

When I described the current state of my deer herd and habitat post hurricane destruction his recommendation was to do a camera survey { He developed camera censusing while at Ms. State which is to this date the most accurate way to determine population} and remove a doe for every yearling buck I can identify. For every yearling buck there is a yearling doe and this controls population growth.

Was fun to hear him and Dr. Dave Guynn describe how they developed the DMAP program which is now used all over the country to give private landowners the opportunity to manage their property. Also Dr. Guynn worked with James Kroll in Wi. on the CWD debacle there. What a hotbed cauldron that was/is! Loved his stories on that.

Baker - We owe a lot of the enjoyment from deer hunting we get today from dedicated biologist that have pioneered wildlife and habitat management. Upper Midwest around the great lakes is territory I've never visited.

I listened to one of my favorites yesterday, Dr. Michael Chamberlain, from UGA. He was a guest on "Georgia Afield Hunting Podcast" - Episode 30. Did an hour on his coyote research. Fascinating listen. He hails from your neck of the woods.

Lucky you missed out on the 8+ inches of snow we got on the 22.

The men are better looking, the women are stronger, and all our children are above average in Northern Minnesota. Glad you had a chance to visit.

Would love to get their take on CWD.
They were quick to point out that much is not known. That said they believed the Wi. situation was hysterical , political and grossly overstated.Beyond that neither of them were overly concerned about cwd , politics aside.
