Hazelnuts from seed

I collected a few hazelnuts from the shrubs behind my skinning shed today and plan on trying to grow them from seed. What's the best method, direct seed in their final destination spot or grow in pots and then plant next fall? If growing in pots, do they need to be cold stratified in the fridge first? I have some that are still green and I think those need to dry down a little bit first. Any advice?

I grew one in a pot years ago. I think it was of the European variety because it is like 8 feet tall now.

Did you stratify in the fridge or just stick it in a pot?

Kept it in the frig over winter until it sprouted. I will say I had about two dozen in there and only one germinated.
