Grafting technique pics.....

Y'alls tree knowledge is amazing! Grafting looks like it would be a very rewarding endeavor.

Ok can you explain this like you are explaining to an idot.....well because you are explaining to an idiot (this guy) when it comes to trees.

What is the main objective you are trying to achieve by grafting trees. If you take a persimmon and cut it to graft a persimmon scion to it, what was the reason behind cutting the original tree? Also, when grafting do you have to graft persimmon to persimmon, apple to apple, pear to pear, etc?

It's another one of those things I wish I would have paid attention to what my grandpa was doing when he was messing around out in his fruit tree orchard.

When trees grow from seed it's through sexual reproduction and you get mixed genetics (the same reason siblings are different even though they are from the same parents). You don't really know what kind of producer that tree will grow into. If you graft you can grow a clone of the scion tree. If the scion tree was a heavy producer with perfectly colored apples, then your grafted tree will be exactly the same.
Persimmons are either male or female trees. You can graft to make a male a female for fruit.

and yes--you have to graft to the same trees. There are a few exceptions but apple to apple, pear to pear, and persimmon to persimmons

Dog doc and fish do you have any experience bark grafting nut trees like pecan hicorky hican or butternuts? If so is it as successful as the persimmon bark grafting? I have only bark grafted once and it was flowering crab apples for a friend.

I bark graft pecans just like I do persimmons with very good success.

I've seen where pecans aren't recommended to be grafted to hickory since they will out grow the under stock. Any idea if a hican would be fine to graft to hickory?

Thanks for the information guys. Out of all the readings I have done on here I never did catch the why part. That explains it perfectly and what I had assumed as well. But I am an idiot when it comes to trees. I asked because I have a grove of persimmon on one of my farms so I was trying to figure out what to do with them and why I would do anything at all.

Grafting time for me is after the trees have leafed out and begun new growth. Right around May 1 in my neck of the woods. I tried one right at bud break this year and the bark would not slip. It tore in chunks. Too early. Doc may have a different "best" time.

Thanks Fish.

If they are producing lots of fruit then I wouldn't do a thing. I have a persimmon grove and not one produced fruit. They were a bunch of male trees. They all got grafted over with girl parts!

I am with you now. I will do a little more studying of the area and also a few more places I know of that have persimmon. If they aren't producing I will do a few grafts in the future on those male trees.

Yes i do a few pecans most years. My pecan grafting is basically the same as persimmon with a few additional items. Just because i was trained to graft pecans a certain way and persimmons i just figured out using similar techniques.
I will 4-flap, banana graft, pecans when the scion wood is large and i have matching size wood to graft it to. Never tried that with persimmons. Might be worth a try. :)

dogdoc, I have never thought about grapfting my own trees. But with the info and pics that you share, I will definitely have to give it a go in the future. Thanks for your wisdom on this matter.

You are welcome. I learned about grafting on the other forum and it has become an addiction. It's just neat watching a stick grow off another tree.

good luck and if you have any questions then just ask away. I am no expert but if I can't help you I promise there will be someone else here that can.

take care
todd
