Geo in Co

Congrats on a great muley beautiful buck.

So what's the story with the fallow deer? Are they wild running free or was this high fenced. I always thought fallow deer were a beautiful deer. There are ton of them in England surrounding the old estates.

Thanks LNG.

Thanks Dave, I waited till yesterday to eat some of the meat and it passes the smell test, no funk, no game. He isn't as tender or tasty as one of my Iowa farm fresh, kiefer pear finished bucks but good meat non the less.

Thanks Gator, I may opt for the short, 4 day, draw 1st gun elk season next year on that water hole.

Thanks T-max.

Thanks Heart shot, the fallow deer are coming out of a 1200 acre pen. No one wants to pay for a fallow deer so they are depopulating. I have a cooler of fallow to work on today.

My Whirlpool freezer that worked in the family for about 40 years didn't survive the trip to Colorado so it was off to Home Depot the other day. I had the head chilled down to 20* in an old frig. I got 90 lbs of meat off of the mule deer. I usually got 90-100 lbs off of larger borealis Iowa whitetails. I'm looking for a new taxidermist.

Fallow venison is delicious. It was my deer of choice while I lived in New Zealand. I don’t think it’s quite as good as whitetail, but it’s close. Never eaten muley.

I mentioned that they are stinky little buggers. Some of that aroma came with the cooler of meat, however I just ate a couple of pieces of back strap and it is tender and tasty, with no off odors in the cooking process.

Congrats George, that is a nice buck. My wife and I lived on mule deer the first couple years of marriage as we were working part time jobs while going to school. IMO, it’s harder to predict when you’ll get good table fare even when they’ve been handled properly. I too prefer white tails.

Great hunts and stories Geo. Been a fun ride. As for that freezer pic, it reminded me how frustrated/aggravated/mad? I get when trying to get a deer head in my freezer while moving around a certain persons candies and cakes and who knows what else she puts in there. I need to get a dedicated freezer for myself and keep it off limits. Congrats on everything.

Thanks Tom, Doug, it would seem that I'm all in on protein this year. The fellas at the ranch were wondering if I would care for a front shoulder off of a bull elk. Well sure, that has since turned into both shoulders

and another mule deer.

So this afternoon I get to work on 63 lbs of elk, bone in.

Thanks, I just want to go kill a mule deer. OTC archery AZ for the month of January if anyone is up for it.

Nice! Congratulations George. Let us know how those big ear deer compare on the plate to those old corn fed deer you used to eat.

I'm pleasantly surprised after all of the reviews that I have heard and read. I have been eating off of two different mule deer bucks and I find the meat to compare very well to the whitetails. Tender but perhaps not as tasty as whitetail finished off on pears but tasty, good meat non-the less.

G, I know you have to be missing your pear tree. You need to get some young ones started at the new location.

PS: Wishing you a happy new year!

Thanks Steve and a prosperous new year to you, yours, your green thumb, and deer friends.

I'm convinced that rye is the only thing that I will ever be able to grow here.

I went on my first ranch style guided hunt yesterday.

We drove around looking for a shooter.

My guide was yelling at me to shoot before I had my stuff gathered up and a round chambered.

A 190 yard heart shot quartering towards, she ran up hill about 30 yards. She was one of 3 fallow does that escaped the pen and needed to be cleaned up. I still like my .308.
