First try growing trees

Was going to take cuttings and plant them from several different apple and crabapple trees. From the videos I've watched this seems to be the time of year for it. My questions are
1 What type of potting soil to start.
2 What type of rooting hormone.
3 Where do I keep them.
4 When to repot and finally plant.

I am not aware of being able to do apples and crabapples from cuttings. You can graft them to a different root stock, and some plants you can propagate from cuttings, but I am not aware of anyone having much success getting apples from cuttings alone. I'm not saying it can't be done...I am here to learn as well.

I've seen people try but haven't seen success ratio or follow ups. I'm just curious. Never tried but was hoping another member had.

Drewboy, I'm with you on this one. I stuck some apple tree cuttings in a jar and set it on a window sill about 2 weeks ago. Leaf shoots have now sprung but no visible roots. I figure I will try to plant them and see what happens.

You might want to try air layering instead of using cuttings. I haven't tried either way yet and don't really understand the difference between the two ways. Brush's property tour mentions about air layering in it. If I have time this year I plan on trying both ways this year with a pear tree I have in backyard this year.

Down in Nicaragua everyone has a fence around their house. The lower income people who can't afford a fence go into the bush, cut a stick from a certain tree and pound it into the ground where they want their fence, it will then root and grow into a living tree, making a fence. However, growing trees from cuttings in the states is much more difficult, and a high humidity atmosphere is almost a requirement, like stretching plastic over the cutting. Starting a plant from cuttings is much easier with shrubs like elderberry etc.

I tried this last Spring with Apple trees. I had some cuttings leaf out but they eventually just died out after a few weeks. I used rooting hormone but no roots formed. Not sure if it can work or not
