Fire wood shed

I posted a pic of this firewood shed we built over Thanksgiving. In the past, we just piled our firewood at the edge of the woods. Always messy and come winter, always wet. Brooks showed up the Friday after Thanksgiving with plans he got from Lowes and lumber. We used repurposed tin left over from our cabin build for the roof. Went up fast and we now have dry firewood. About time to start cutting more wood. Plans were really easy to follow.

Do you mind posting the plans? I suck at building but have some handy friends. Would love to build a shed exactly like that.

That looks great Triple C! Having Brooks around is like having your very own contractor...

I have been on our deer lease since 1998 and we have a great camp atmosphere down there and have had some great times. The only kink is that the owner is aging and the entire 15,000 acre property is going to the boy scouts and he has already transferred a large portion of it which our area is included in. The deal he made with them is all the leases stay the same as long as he is alive and after that they have control to either keep or get rid of the leases. I think they will keep them but I think they will price us out like they have is some other areas. The boy scouts have been in the equation for about 10 years now and have a big lodge near my hunting area. We had lots of plands to build walk in coolers, skinning sheds, a firewood shed like yours and several other things but have been in limbo for years because of what is going to happen with the property.

A lot of this was brought home to us when we went to the annual "Night before Rifle Season Dinner" that the owner puts on for all his hunters and lease members every year. Our host is 79 yrs old and starting to really show his age. They announced this would be the last year he would have his guest out to hunt his personal 5000 acre hunting area which consisted of business associates. Reasons stated were that since he always put them up in lodging and fed them 3 times a day on the ranch it was just getting to be too difficult with his age. We may not have a dinner next year...

Even though our house does not burn wood yet we do have a fire pit in the backyard and I may build one just for that. Thank you for showing this!

Very nice. I think you'll like it a lot. Sure is nice having dry wood.
Here is one I built a couple years ago out of pallets and free siding a neighbor gave me. The siding is used for roofing material. Mine will hold just under 3 cords. The pallets were 48x40's and the floor is 4 pallets long and 2 wide so it ends up being 16 ft long and 6.6 ft deep.
The only store bought materials were two 16 ft 2x12's and a couple boxes of screws. I stained it with used motor oil and diesel mix which acts as a bug deterrent and preservative.
It was an enjoyable project. Only thing I'd do differently next time is save the light pallets (pine not oak) for the roof.

Woodshed #1 is (mostly) filled; now to fill #2!

You started a good thread. Your wood shed is well designed with plenty of ventilation. Good plan and an excellent illustration of how to ...

Not bad for an ole north Georgia guy. :)

Those are some sho nuff grown up wood sheds! Ours is 4' x 12'. I promised a pic of the plans but what I got wasn't the full set. Here's what I got along with some close up pics. We ran slats on ends horizontal instead of vertical as the plans call for. We also ran slats on the back whereas the plans show for an open back.

Are slats preferred for air flow (I've noticed none of these are fully inclosed)?

That's correct. Orientation matters as well. Best facing south or south west for optimal sun exposure which aids in drying the wood. Mine sets at the top of a ridge that always seems to have a breeze also.

There is no way I can build that based on those instructions. You have a lot more faith in my building abilities than they deserve. :)

Cutman,

The only solid structure surface is the roof. Everything else is designed to increase air flow. You would need two spaces for each slat board. If it is solid and keeps the rain off the wood then you are good.

U ain't building a piano - just a wood shed. Twelve wide and four deep.

Cutman...I thought same thing when I got a pic of the plans. A lot missing! I'll try and get the actual plans from Brooks and post em up.

Cutman...Go to Popular Mechanics website and search for firewood shed and you'll find the plans for this shed. Here's a couple of screen shots I took of the plans.
