February Habitat Management

Deer season has come and gone, February is here, and it’s time to get to work! Habitat management happens year ‘round, but late winter and early spring are my favorite times to be out in the woods working on habitat projects!

What projects do y’all have planned for this off-season?

And it’s CHESTNUT SEASON! I just planted three Rootmaker trays full.

Bow season still open and the crappie are biting. Hunting some coons at night. Will spray wheat in the bean and sunflowers fields to kill it and get ready for spring planting. Need to pick up all the ground blinds. Going to bush hog some more pasture and spray fescue to assist establishment of nwsg. Did I say crappie fish. Also have a trip planned shortly to Panama for Black Marlin.

We haven't had any snow lately (until today), so I've been plowing through junk trees and the gd Jap bush honeysuckle with extreme prejudice.

Now with some snow, the rabbits and coyotes might get attention.

I dont think I want to trade - even for a day. No Java. 26 degrees this morning with ice forming in the rod guides, but caught enough for me and my wife to eat fresh crappie filets tonight.;)

I love crappie. Have some fond memories catching slabs on warm March days near Dezark Arkansas. Flat bottom boat, sculling paddle, crappie pole and a coke. Good times!

10 lbs of white and red clover hand seeded Saturday, some for fire breaks and some for a clean area to plant a dozen Dolgo crabs. Snowed Sunday and temps all over the place this week should work the seed in nicely. Need to break out the chainsaw next week.
