Fall Plot Timing?

I've got a 1/2 acre plot of buckwheat that I planted June 1st. Was wanting to do WR,Oats, CC for the fall. Goal is to plant it again in BW next summer.
My question or thoughts is to throw and mow a few paths pretty soon to prevent cleaning the plate. Then follow up with the rest of the field around September 1st. Looking for an October attraction.
Would like to stay away from tillage if at all possible.
Any thoughts? Too soon? Plant something else? Etc.
Thanks,
Brian

How thick is the buckwheat. That will determine a lot. I would think you are about a month too early for broadcasting any cereal grains. You can do the "throw and mow" with buckwheat just fine and your mix looks great--just need to wait till a little longer. I don't know if you can enlarge the plot a bit but that is the advantage of having a perennial clover next to your fall plot. Always have something on the table to eat. If it was me I'd toss in some red clover and then forget the buckwheat next spring. The red clover will carry you over till next fall when it is time to plant again.

good luck

This was the 1st year of having anything in the field. Was wanting do 2 years back to back for weed suppression and organic matter buildup. Was limed the same time as planting.

I agree, a little early for grains. How about doing your CC with some brassica in your strips, then when you come back in Sept for the grains, just overseed them into your brassica strips? WR will stay more attractive young if planted late Aug to mid Sept in this area ,but what you are suggesting might work. Doesn't hurt to try new things. Worst will happen is you have to overseed again later in fall. Good luck.

Buckwheat is thin in places. Some grasses and weeds are coming in. Main reason I don't want to clean plate is this fellow and his buddy.. Like your ideal Dogghr.

Yea I agree. Keep that boy happy. Brassica are a good weed suppressor as is WR of course. I usually overseed browsed brassica w WR and RC late nov or march
