Fall alfalfa planting

Is it possible to plant alfalfa with winter grains and clover and it survive the winter and it comes back up with the clover the following spring.

I do know that around here, spring planted alfalfa is not frost tolerant. Farmers just prefer to plant in the early summer and irrigate so they don't have to deal with a surprise frost.

Not sure what stage alfalfa needs to get to before it can take a freeze, but I would be definitely finding out if I was gonna try it. Most alfalfa varieties are not cheap.

I planted last fall, had superb germination and then lost most during the winter. What has survived has been an incredible draw. If I were to do it again, I’d plant early summer knowing I’d be dependent upon chemicals for weed control.

I planted mine in late sept and thats usually when we plant in my area for hay.Biggest issue may be planting a variety that is for the area.I didn't lose any to freeze and it did as planned and pulled a buck out that we had only seen once live so my daughter could harvest him with ML.You need to have the field as flat as possible or to where it will drain completely as it doesn't tolerate standing water.I thought I had my little field good but with 40 inches in a month I lost part of it.alfalfa.jpg

Nice pictures, could be the next alfalfa BoB mix! Anyone simply broadcast alfalfa onto bare dirt? I don't have a disk or no-till drill.
